The underachieving pitching staff was the main reason the Milwaukee Brewers failed to reach the postseason in 2022. With the new PECOTA projections released, there is renewed hope in the starting rotation's numbers for 2023.

The trade market had been dead during the Winter Meetings, but it's a new week and the hot stove warmed up quickly on Monday afternoon with some catcher trades. The Brewers, in need of a catcher, acquired All Star William Contreras from the Atlanta Braves as part of a three-team deal. 

The starting rotation has been one of the biggest strengths of the Brewers since the 2020 season. That looks to be the case again in 2023; let's look at the options available to the team.

The start of the 2022 MLB season marks the Milwaukee Brewers’ 53^rd Opening Day. There have been memorable moments, forgettable outcomes, and random performances over more than half a century of games. Pitchers are often ahead of the hitters to begin play, so it’s notable when players achieve rare feats offensively on Opening Day.

The start of the 2001 season was one that many Brewers fans had been looking forward to for a long time.  Well, actually, the 2000 season was supposed to be the one they had been waiting for, but due to the infamous crane accident lifting part of the roof of new Miller Park into place, we were made to wait one more year to finally settle into our new home.  

The spirit and mission of our series on X-factors for the 2023 Milwaukee Brewers is to find places where there could be big impact from seemingly small things–where statistical projections don’t capture the breadth of possible outcomes. Today, we turn our attention to the gamble the team has taken on William Contreras as a defensive catcher–and the coaches who gave them the confidence to do so.

The offseason begins five days after the last game of the World Series, and the Brewers will be open for business. But what can we reasonably expect them to spend? To find out, we looked at the team's payroll situation at a back-of-the-napkin level. The infield was pretty straightforward. The outfield is a different story.

The numbers were phenomenal. 18-12 record. 280 innings pitched. 17 complete games. Only 14 home runs and 50 walks allowed. Three shutout innings in the All-Star game. It was 1978, and for 22-year-old Lary Sorensen, it was one of the finest years any Brewer pitcher ever put together. Sadly, he would never match his glorious 1978 campaign, and Sorensen's personal life would eventually overshadow his baseball achievements.
