If there’s been something that’s a constant for Milwaukee this year it’s been injuries to their starting pitching staff. The latest casualty was Aaron Ashby.

Getting set for a doubleheader today against the San Francisco Giants, the Milwaukee Brewers made a trio of transactions to set their roster. With an additional spot open due to the doubleheader, they activated infielder Mike Brosseau and recalled pitcher Justin Topa, while only needing to option infielder Esteury Ruiz.

For the last half decade fans and analysts alike have listed the Brewers bullpen as an area of strength, and potential catalyst of their success. Without much of a second thought, this expectation carried into the current season. The results have been mixed. But fans shouldn't worry. 

Fans of baseball see the massive amount of money spent, though fans of the Milwaukee Brewers look on from afar. While it is still a couple of months out, with Opening Day on March 30th this year, there could be a reason to be concerned.

As has been the case for most of the 2022 Major League Baseball season, the Milwaukee Brewers pitching staff remains in flux. Prior to yesterday’s action the club recalled Trevor Kelley and optioned Jason Alexander to Triple-A Nashville.

After outrighting Pedro Severino to Triple-A late last week, the Milwaukee Brewers followed up with a handful of transactions over the weekend. Starting pitcher Adrian Houser began a rehab assignment with Triple-A Nashville, while Jason Alexander was recalled to the big leagues. Jake McGee was designated for assignment, and J.C. Mejia was removed from the restricted list.

“That’s so Mets!” they used to say! Some series of unforced errors, epic collapses and MVP caliber players getting injured a third of the way into the season. Queens would weep and the rest of the baseball world would snicker. Cosmically ordained bad luck and worse handling seemed to follow a team with such aggression that their 2015 World Series appearance has been forgotten entirely. That isn’t the case in 2022.
