We’ve looked at the state of the Brewers on the field, but a crucial aspect of the team also warrants review: the decision-makers, both those on the field and those off the field.

It’s math.

Who is the most successful pitcher in Brewer history? Sheets? Gallardo? Bosio? Caldwell? Nope. The answer is Teddy Higuera. The amazing thing is that Higuera was plunked out of the Mexican league at age 25 - and still had an astounding run from 1986-88 where averaged 7.7 bWAR a year. That run solidified Higuera as the most productive pitcher in franchise history.

With Aaron Ashby landing on the IR and Woodruff still a little ways out, the Brewers only have four  starting pitchers on the roster. Chi Chi Gonzalez will likely make that five on Tuesday.

When Milwaukee Brewers President of Baseball Operations David Stearns looks to build a roster, he targets cost-effective ways to eliminate weaknesses on the club. Before the 2021 season, Stearns shored up the defense by acquiring Kolten Wong and Jackie Bradley, Jr. The focus for this past offseason has centered on improving production against left-handed pitchers, an area the Brewers floundered in all of last season.

Mock draft season is going to really heat up over the next few weeks. Players' demands become clearer and teams must solidify their board with as much information as they possibly can.

MLB and the MLBPA have agreed on a number of new rule changes. Some were part of the new Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA). Others have been tacked on in recent weeks. To varying degrees, the rule changes will impact the game on the field. Many of the rules being passed lately feel as if they are targeting smart mid-market teams, such as the Brewers. How will these rule changes actually affect the team?

After a disappointing 2021 season, Keston Hiura is trying to get back to his 2019 self but it would seem that his biggest obstacle is the Brewers coaching staff and manager Craig Counsell.

Over the weekend Milwaukee made a handful of transactions that impacted the Major League roster. Starter Freddy Peralta was placed back on the injured list with right shoulder inflammation, and he was joined by Eric Lauer, who’s dealing with left elbow inflammation. Trevor Kelley was recalled from Triple-A Nashville.

Major League Baseball officially announced details for this summer’s Draft late last week. The draft, for the second year, will coincide with MLB’s All-Star Week. While the All-Star Game festivities and draft will take place July 17-19 in Los Angeles, the Draft Combine will be in San Diego’s Petco Park from June 14-20.

Most assume that MLB teams have concerns about trading within their division. With talented NL Central players possibly available in a deal, it would benefit the Milwaukee Brewers if those clubs were willing to listen. There are at least a couple of guys on three of the four other teams worth a long look.
