  • Brewers Add Four Players to 40-Man Roster

    Seth Stohs

With the deadline about 90 minutes away, the Brewers announced that they have added infielder Brice Turang and bullpen arm Abner Uribe to their 40-man roster. Then ten minutes before the deadline, they also announced the additions of reliever Cam Robinson and first baseman Jon Singleton.

Just before the 5:00 central time deadline, the Brewers announced that, in addition to adding RH RP Abner Uribe and infielder Brice Turang to their 40-man roster, they will also be adding relief Cam Robinson and first baseman Jon Singleton

Turang is the son of a former big leaguer and has consistently moved up the organizational ladder since the Brewers made him their first-round draft pick in 2018 out of high school in Corona, California. He spent the entire 2022 season at Triple-A Nashville. He will turn 23 years old this weekend.

Uribe, on the other hand, made just two appearances for Double-A Biloxi in early April before his season came to an end. He did return and pitched for Glendale in the Arizona Fall League and pitched well enough, and proved himself healthy enough for the Brewers to feel comfortable adding him.

Robinson was drafted in 2017 and had his struggles early, but he broke out in 2022. He pitched well at both Wisconsin and Biloxi before ending the season at Triple-A Nashville. He's got potentially dominant stuff that could work out of the bullpen.

The surprise may be the addition of slugger Jon Singleton. He spent all of 2022 with Nashville and provided a lot of homers and a lot of strikeouts. At the end of the World Series, he became a free agent but quickly re-signed with the Brewers. Now today he has been added to the big-league roster. Considering his past in the game, this does sure have the makings a really special human interest story by March!

There are several players that are now at risk of being selected in the Rule 5 draft including infields Felix Valerio and Eduardo Garcia, outfielder Carlos Rodriguez, pitchers Victor Castaneda, Justin Jarvis and others.

What do you think about the Brewers additions? Which prospects are you most concerned that the team could lose?

I highly doubt both Singleton and Tellez are on the opening day roster. This is most likely just insurance in case they find a deal for Tellez or he gets hurt in ST. Is it a good use of a 40 man spot? I don't know.

It could also mean Hiura will be traded or non tendered.

    just throwing it out there……..

I think they'd LOVE to find a taker for Hiura.

As to Singleton, for me this whole thing hinges on Devanney. If someone plucks him I'll be ticked. My guess is he won't be picked but it sure isn't a slam dunk. And I think he's more likely to get taken than Singleton would've been. We'll see.

Not really a whole lot to lose

Well, what you'd potentially have to lose is Devanney. I think your first paragraph outlining why you think he won't get picked makes quite a bit of sense; still I wouldn't have rolled these dice to protect Singleton, even if it isn't a risky roll.

Or you have Singleton DH, Tellez and 1B and Hiura playing against lefties in one of those spots.

Two more comments on the Singleton selection:

    • Somewhat similarly, we curiously signed 30-year old RHP Deolis Guerra to the active roster on October 18, 2019, even though we’d kept him in AAA that entire season (save for 2/3s of an inning in MLB). And then we DFA’d him by January 30, 2020. As such, I don’t consider the selection of Singleton as a guarantee of an Opening Day 2023 roster spot. Perhaps he’s a placeholder that we want to keep on hand whilst we figure out what other moves to make offensively.
    • From July 27 through August 26 last year, OF Jonathan Davis was active for 26 MLB games, registering just 16 plate appearances in that time. To me, this goes to show how the 13th bat on MLB rosters can essentially just be a stashed player, especially with the designated hitter materially reducing the number of pinch hitters that get used. So would we rather stash a player like Mario Feliciano as the 13th MLB bat, rarely playing him but preserving his last minor league option OR use that spot for a guy like Jon Singleton who had the highest walk rate (20.1% of PAs) in the 20-team International League last year and can also hit dingers?

There are other examples that kind of stand out. Atlanta added RH RP Michael Tonkin to their 40-man roster a couple of days ago. He turns later this week. The Twins let him go after the 2017 season, and he spent a year in Japan before toiling in the minor leagues since, including 2021 in independent leagues. He was great in AAA Gwinnett this year, but never got called up. Maybe it's the player saying, "I am getting MLB offers from other teams."

Agreed, that's how I read his comments on Singleton... That he's already made the 23 OD roster.

Goes to show how much $ we're going to spend on offense this winter.

It might. And I obviously don't know anything with any certainty. But if there is going to be an attempt to keep Corbin Burnes AND Brandon Woodruff around long-term, it's going to cost a lot of money. Right or wrong, that may mean needing to be creative elsewhere. I might be off, and we will likely know more on Friday after the arbitration decisions.

I think one thing we have to remind ourselves is that the ability to sign Burnes and/or Woodruff is not completely in the Brewers hands. Even if MA comes up with the money to push the budget out to get a bite of the apple, Burnes and/or Woodruff might not be interested in signing a long term deal in Milwaukee.

You already have some players publicly questioning the FO/Ownership group of their true desire to "win" after some of their decisions last season.  If some of them are saying this in public god only knows what they are saying in private.

In my opinion adding Singleton to the 40 man and implying that he will play a role at the major league level(because they actually believe he will move the needle) is not the way to show to anyone that Brewers are serious about ending 53 year drought of not winning a WS or ending the 40 pennant drought.  It might be insurance just in case something that are planning doesn't work out but I doubt it.

Friday now to me will be a clear sign on how the rest of this off season will be.

I think you are probably making a mountain out of a molehill here. We're arguing about a guy who, even if he destroys the ball in Spring Training, is looking like a potential platoon 1B/DH at most. If he makes the team, he's the 25th or 26th man, and if he doesn't produce, they'll simply DFA him and move on. The Brewers regularly churn the bottom portion of the roster, and this is another case of that. Heck, there isn't even a 100% chance that he'll make it to Spring Training on the 40-man roster. But they had spots open now, and he's a guy that they obviously deemed to have some upside, so they protected him. We'll see what happens. But even the best World Series-contending teams churn the bottom of the roster with these types of guys.

Related to adding to the 40 man deadline, David Hamilton who the Red Sox obtained for Hunter Renfroe was added to their 40 man. I don't know if he will ever hit enough to be a major league regular but 70/78 in stolen bases is pretty impressive.
