  • Brewers Minor League Link Report (7/14): Carolina Wins a Walk-Off, While Other Full Season Squads Fall

    'Ro Mueller

The Mudcats scored two in the 9th to walk it off. Wisconsin battled back thrice but lost in extra innings. Biloxi collected 10 hits, but lacked clutch ones in another loss. Nashville gave up 20+ hits in a forgettable defeat.

Carolina was cruising 5-2 before conceding four runs in the 7th inning, then pulled out a 7-6 win against Delmarva anyway thanks to Junior Montero (three scoreless innings), Oswal Leones (3-run homer, walk-off sacrifice fly) and Jackson Chourio (3-for-5, scored game-winner).

Wisconsin was tied 4-4 in the 3rd inning and 7-7 in the 7th inning, but couldn’t muster another run in a 10-inning 8-7 loss at West Michigan. Tristan Peters reached base four times and knocked in three runs.

Andruw Monasterio had a home run amongst his three hits, while Garrett Mitchell also produced three hits and two RBIs, but the squad left 10 men on base in a 7-3 loss at Tennessee.

Josh Lindblom and the Sounds got rocked at home against Memphis, trailing 14-1 entering the 9th inning and ultimately losing 19-4 while giving up 23 hits.

In short season action, both ACL clubs were victorious while DSL Brewers2 came back to run their record against DSL Brewers1 to 5-0 this year.

Thursday’s Game Balls go to the aforementioned Leones, Peters, Montero, Mitchell and Chourio, with apologies to Monasterio.

    Transactions:

    • RHP Ryan Middendorf promoted to Low-A Carolina from ACL Brewers Blue
    • RHP Raul Mendoza transferred to ACL Brewers Gold from ACL Brewers Gold

    Carolina Pre-Game Media Notes
    Final: Carolina 7, Delmarva 6
    Box Score / Game Log

Via the Mudcats’ website, game details, and we encourage readers to review each of the affiliate write-ups as part of their Link Report routine: Micro Brews Win 7-6 on Walk-Off Sac Fly

Carolina led 5-0 by the 2nd inning on a OF Jackson Chourio RBI single, OF Oswal Leones 3-run homer (2nd of the year) and INF Luis Silva singling and scoring on a ground out.

RHP Edwin Jimenez (6 IP, 6 R, 5 ER, 1 BB, 1 WP, 6 Ks) had put together a solid outing through six innings, but gave up three singles and a home run to start the 7th inning, exiting with the game tied 5-5 and the game-leading run on base with nobody out.

Delmarva grabbed the lead 6-5 that same inning, aided in part by a Jeferson Quero error. Quero’s frustration then boiled over with a pop out in the bottom half of the inning, so the umpires sent him home early.

In the injury-watch department, OF Hendry Mendez exited to start the 5th inning, although he hadn’t batted or seen a ball in the outfield for several innings. With OF Hedbert Perez injured in Wednesday’s game, this forced INF Jean Carmona into outfield duty. Will these unfortunate injuries open the door for someone from Arizona (Eduarqui? Jace? Luis?) to come up?

Nevertheless, RHP Junior Montero (3 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 2 BB, 4 Ks) kept his squad in the game, facing 10 batters over three scoreless innings of superb work, not giving up a single hit and ultimately earning the win for his efforts.

Veteran C Jose Sibrian started the comeback by drawing a full-count walk with one out in the 9th inning, moving to third on a Chourio single and scoring on a fielder’s choice which got nobody out.

Chourio then moved to third base on a wild pitch and scored on Leones’ game-ending shallow sacrifice fly which saw the Shorebirds’ third baseman trip over the warm-up pitchers’ mound in foul territory.

    Wisconsin Pre-Game Media Notes
Final: West Michigan 8, Wisconsin 7

    Box Score / Game Log

Via the Timber Rattlers’ website, details: Whitecaps Top Rattlers in Ten Innings

A 4-run 3rd inning on three singles (including DH Wes Clarke ’s 2-run single) and three walks gave Wisconsin its first lead at 4-2, but an error and Whitecap 2-run homer tied it back up at 4-4 in the same inning.

LHP Russell Smith (5 IP, 4 R (2 ER), 4 H, 4 BB, 1 WP, 3 Ks) didn’t have his best stuff but was positioned for a potential win when OF Tristan Peters (2-for-3, 2 walks, 3 RBIs) walked and scored on a sacrifice fly in the 6th inning for a 5-4 lead.

However, RHP Christian Tripp gave that lead right back in a 3-run bottom half of the inning before Peters came through again with a 2-run single to knot the game at 7-7 in the 7th inning, scoring 2B Jose Acosta (2-for-4, double, walk) and OF Arbert Cipion (1-for-3, walk, SB).

Similar to Montero’s effort for Carolina, RHP Brady Schanuel (3 1/3 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 3 BB, 1 K; dropping his season ERA to 5.00) pitched 3 1/3 scoreless innings of relief here to give the Timber Rattler offense a chance, but they collected no hits in the 8th or 9th innings, then blew their chance in the 10th inning.

Peters singled yet again to lead off the 10th inning, giving the team first-and-third with nobody out. However, West Michigan escaped with a strikeout and 3B Zavier Warren ’s ground ball double play. Although Warren did manage a sacrifice fly earlier in the game, it’s time to admit that he’s having a miserable season thus far (.197 season AVG, .578 season OPS; 0-for-4 in this game).

RHP Tyler Gillies got the chance to pitch the pressure-packed 10th inning, but didn’t retire a batter: walk, hit-by-pitch, walk-off single.

C Darrien Miller went 0-for-5 in the game, but did manage to throw out both attempted base stealers which is important progress for him defensively.

    Biloxi Pre-Game Media Notes
    Final: Tennessee 7, Biloxi 3

    Box Score / Game Log

Via the Shuckers’ website, game details: Mitchell & Monasterio Each With Three Hits In Shuckers 7-3 Loss

The Shuckers just can’t seem to put a complete game together these days, with one component always letting them down. In this game, it was the lack of a clutch hitting, stranding 10 men while Tennessee only stranded five.

SS Andruw Monasterio (3-for-5, HR, double, 1 RBI) doubled and scored on a Garrett Mitchell (3-for-5, 2 doubles, 2 RBIs) single to give Biloxi a 1-0 lead in the 1st inning.

LHP Brandon Knarr (5 IP, 4 R, 7 H, 0 BB, 4 Ks) escaped a 2-on, nobody out 2nd inning, then got an assist from Mitchell to end the 3rd inning.

However, after a 2B Felix Valerio double went for naught in the 4th inning, the Smokies smacked two homers in the bottom half of the inning (by Cubs’ #24 and #18 prospects Chase Strump (15th of season) and Alexander Canario (21st of season) for a 2-1 advantage.

Monasterio’s fifth AA homer (in just 15 games) tied the game back up at 2-2 in the 5th inning, but Tennessee responded with two runs on three hits in the bottom half of the frame.

RHP Kent Hasler came on in relief in the 6th inning, giving up a run despite not yielding a hit (walk, stolen base, error, sacrifice fly) for a 5-2 deficit.

    A Joey Wiemer
(2-for-4) walk, Monasterio single and Mitchell RBI double put Biloxi in excellent position in the 7th inning, down 5-3 with runners at 2nd and 3rd base and one out, but Smokies’ reliever Jeremiah Estrada came in to extinguish the threat (strikeout, ground out).

RHP Cam Robinson then gave up his first runs, hits and walks in AA, allowing two runs in the 7th inning for a 7-3 deficit, though he did escape a 2-on, nobody out situation in the 8th inning via a strikeout and fly out double play (Mitchell’s second assist of the game).

    Nashville Pre-Game Media Notes
    Final: Memphis 19, Nashville 4

    Box Score / Game Log

Via the Sounds’ website, game details: Redbirds Thump Sounds at First Horizon Park

Veteran RHP Josh Lindblom was tagged for eight earned runs in just two innings of work, ballooning his season ERA to 4.74.

The game was fully out-of-hand at 14-1 when 3B Tyler White (45.00 season ERA) went to the mound to throw the 9th inning, giving up another five runs on seven hits to remind us that pitching is very hard.

Leading 19-1, the stingy Redbirds didn’t return the position-player-pitching favor, instead sending out RHP Jacob Bosiokovic for the 9th inning, who exited due to injury after giving up a triple to SS Pablo Reyes (2-for-4, triple, walk). Memphis then called on yet another pitcher, who was tagged by homers from 2B Mark Mathias (7th of the year) and 1B Jon Singleton (14th of the year) to give the final 19-4 scoreline.

    ARIZONA COMPLEX LEAGUE

Final: ACL Brewers Blue 14, ACL Guardians 4 (final after 7 innings)
    Box Score / Game Log

The come-from-behind victory boosts Blue’s record to 11-17.

Yes, they actually trailed 4-1 entering the penultimate inning, putting across eight runs in the 6th inning and five runs in the 7th inning.

RHP Jesus Rivero had his best outing, covering two scoreless innings to end the game, dropping his season ERA to 12.00 (gulp).

After his teammates produced four runs to knot the game at 4-4 in the 6th inning, OF Jace Avina (2-for-4, HR, double, walk, 4 RBIs) had the game’s biggest hit, hitting a 2-out, 3-run blast (his fifth homer of the year) for a 7-4 lead.

This was a nice offensive outburst for the Blue Men: 1B Quinton Low (3-for-5, 2 doubles, 4 RBIs), Reidy Mercado (2-for-4, walk, SB), Jhonnys Cabrera (2-for-3, walk, RBI).

Final: ACL Brewers Gold 3, ACL Cubs 0 (final after 7 innings)
    Box Score / Game Log

If excellent pitching is more your style, the Golden Boys fit the bill on Thursday, as Gold evened up their season record at 14-14.

19-year old RHP Gerson Calzadilla (6 1/3 IP, 0 R, 2 H, 2 BB, 6 Ks) was rarely troubled as he threw his second straight 5+ inning game with zero earned runs, dropping his season ERA to 2.77 ERA in 26 innings.

21-year old RHP Raul Mendoza capped off the shutout by retiring the final two batters of the game to earn his first save in the Brewers’ system.

Most of the offense came in the 1st inning, although rehabbing 3B Alberis Ferrer (1-for-3, double, walk) was the only player to hit the ball out of the infield.

Jadher Areinamo played shortstop in this contest, getting on base three times (1-for-2, 2 walks, SB), while OF Luis Castillo (1-for-3, walk) and 2B Gregory Barrios (1-for-2, walk, 2 RBIs) each reached base twice.

    DOMINICAN SUMMER LEAGUE

    Final: DSL Brewers2 3, DSL Brewers1 1 (final in 6 innings)
    Box Score / Game Log

Here’s your DSL game summary from my colleague @JosephZarr (thanks!):

20yo Dominican RHP Jeral Vizcaino grabs the DSL Brewers 2 victory going 4 complete innings of no hit, 1 walk, 5 strikeout ball. He came aboard in the 3rd inning with the Brewers 2 trailing 1-0 and proceeded to close the game in shutdown fashion. Vizcaino moves to 2-1 on the year in 18 innings pitched over eight outings (1 Start). After today's outing, his numbers are becoming increasingly impressive: 21k:8bb, 0.145 BAA, 0.94 WHIP, 3.00 ERA.

On the other side of the diamond, and pitching wonderfully for the DSL Brewers 1, 17 yo 6'3" Dominican Lefty Wande Torres gets the no decision - a chance at victory ended when fellow Domincan RHP Gregory Baez surrendered 3 runs in his inning of work; walking two to start and throwing a wild pitch for good measure. Whereas Baez has scuffled over his 7 plus innings of relief work to date, Torres remains upward trending and another arm to watch - 17 years old, lefty, decent k:bb ratio (23:11), hitters only batting 0.182, a respectable 1.25 WHIP, and now a sub-4 era at 3.93 after five complete shut out innings today (2 hits, 2 walks, 3 k's) .

The game appears to have been ended early (?): after the Brewers 2 plated 3 runs in the bottom of the sixth the Brewers 1 were never given a chance to answer back in the top-half of the seventh. All three runs came via a Juan Baez (playing 3B today) single hit to short (after the runners had advanced to 2nd and 3rd via the aforementioned Baez wild pitch). Yeison Perez (1B and RF today) then hit a sacrifice fly. And, the game was over or called - it's hard to tell.

We hope that you enjoy the Minor League Link Report. Good luck on Friday, teams!

Quinton Low, imho, has quickly become one of the more interesting lower-level prospects in the system. He has yet to give up a run on the mound and now his bat is heating up? Maybe they’ll let him write some line-up cards in the near-term to really get that resume tidied up!

The three players catching my eye this week:

    (1) OF Tristan Peters - he is putting forth a serious professional season. The really good ones tend to step up in the face of adversity. What he has done in this Whitecaps series with Tyler Black mysteriously shelved (due to dinged up injury - see discussion HERE in Yesterday's GT) and what he has done since the Frelick promotion and the Carlos Rodriguez season-ending promotion is nothing short of solidifying himself as a top prospect. Do not underestimate the young Canuck.

    (2) OF Garrett Mitchell has come up from his ACL rehab assignment and shown why he was so highly thought of: 6-for-9, 2 dubs, 3 RBI’s, and 2 OF assists? Toss in that delicious speed out of the batter’s box and the entire package is being showcased. As always, the question will remain: can he string together a stretch of games? Can he stay remotely healthy to close out the season? He remains a wild card but, man, we get these sublime glimpses and it leaves us wanting more.

    (3) OF Jace Avina is really starting to separate himself down in the ACL Brewers pool of players. OPS now 1.000, 5 HR, 1 3-Bagger, 6 dubs, 0.280 BA. I wish his 35:9 k:bb ratio was a wee more palatable but, at this point, I’m not going to let it deter from my excitement: I want to see him on MiLB.TV?

The Brewers have such an immense wealth of OF prospects in the system - this is the obvious ‘trade from here’ department if they go that route by the deadline. Given how 2022 has evolved, what appears to be true at present is there is a significant gap when it comes to infield depth.

Awesome that they are giving Low a shot to try the two way thing out. Hopefully he can keep the early success going.

As frustrating as Mitchell's fits & starts are, I'm holding out hope for the long run that he maybe takes a similar path to DBacks CF prospect Corbin Carroll, who after being drafted 16th overall in 2019 only played in 49 games from 2019 to 2021 on account of injury/pandemic, but has gone on to post a 315/434/635 line this year to justify his draft slot/prospect hype.

Absolutely have had this same thought this year - that's funny ?. When you watch Mitchell play, it's quite easy to see the innate fluidity and athleticism - he's truly a smooth running gazelle. Where he 'concerns' you at this stage is the obvious ongoing nagging injury issues but he's also been fairly inconsistent at the dish. All the ingredients are there, however, and he does show decent plate discipline. The obvious addendum is: if we're talking about this, the organization obviously knows the same thing and then some. Can he stay healthy, take another couple steps, and put it together? It's really that simple.
