Brewers Minor League Link Report (6/10): Friday Night Fun at the Upper Levels

Transaction: INF Alberis Ferrer has been placed on the Carolina 7-Day IL 

Our forum poster @ARobsBrewCrew did speak with Timber Rattlers OF Carlos Rodriguez, who ended a fantastic month of May with the Midwest League Player of the Week nod. The brief update indicated the right leg surgery (undetermined to us the exact nature) would force Rodriguez to miss the balance of 2022 and could impact the early portion of next season.

In his Minor League catch-up article at The Athletic (subscription), Will Sammon indicates Joey Wiemer's week-long absence was a left-hand issue. Shortstop Freddy Zamora's season-ending injury is due to a procedure on his non-throwing shoulder. Will has more details on each, plus other notes (Chourio, Erceg, Castaneda, Knarr), for those who pay up (do yourself a favor).

First of all, we love a clever game summary headline, kudos!

With the complex league games now on our daily report plate, it'll be more important than ever that you devour all that the four full-season affiliate game stories have to offer, in order to get the most out of your daily visit.  Each outpost has its unique traits within, for instance, the miscellaneous bullet-points that cap each Nashville report is a nice touch, and always informative.

LHP Angel Perdomo went on the 7-day IL way back on April 12th. Thus far, his absence has not been marked as 60-day or season-ending, so that's encouraging. As is often the case in this HIPPA-fearful minor league baseball world, gleaning the specifics of injury status has become more difficult than ever in 2022. Personally, I feel like the media should minimally be able to freely get updates on any player on a 40-man roster, as Perdomo is.

We are often guilty of reading a hot AAA stat line and thinking to ourselves, "that guy deserves a chance (or another chance) on the big league roster, let's take advantage while he's hot", when in reality, whether 40-man roster or other factors come into play, it may not be feasible. But my goodness, while we're all painfully suffering the ineffective big league play in center field and a clearly moribund lifeless environment in the dugout, how much energy would this 30-year-old inject?

One could make a legitimate argument that Caleb Boushley is this team's MVP, devouring innings and killing any team slides.

Yeah, that's 5'8" with cleats on. As a supposed 5'8" guy myself, Valerio's been a favorite of mine. It may end up coinciding with a big-league Brewers retool of their roster in the next few years, but Valerio is going to have a significant everyday-player run in Milwaukee, if not elsewhere via trade. (Don't trade him.)

Jakson Reetz is making himself some serious coin, or at least prime opportunity. Dude is earmarked for minor league free agency unless Milwaukee adds him to their 40-man roster by season's end. The suitors will be out the door. Hope your agent is ready, Jakson.

The Shuckers are going with a 12-man pitching staff right now. Heck, there have been Brewer affiliates with 12-man bullpens during portions of the season.

I have no idea what happened to the Southern League we've gotten to know so well since the Huntsville days, but the pinball offensive shows we're getting every night, win or lose, are fun.

Brutal. Fantastic write-up by Chris Mehring, but the pain in the wasted opportunities and blown closures makes for tough but worthwhile reading.

It happens all the time in the game summaries, and I do understand why. See here:

The Timber Rattlers had a great chance to add to their lead in the top of the ninth. Bello started the inning with a double. Then, with one out, Ethan Murray singled and Joe Gray Jr. was hit by a pitch to load the bases. A strikeout and a grounder to short ended the threat.

As fans, we're seeking out, why didn't our team score in that situation. Later on, wait, how did the zombie runner from 2nd base in extras not score in that frame? In this posted example it was the wonderful Tristan Peters who struck out. Tristan won't be protected in print in "The Show", but I get it, and it's not picking on Chris, as it happens all the time - literally all the time -- across all minor league levels. Hey, they like accentuating the positive, as do we. 

Admittedly I haven't watched it in full yet, and these "Mic'd Up" videos can be hit-or-miss, but here's the latest via Darrien Miller, hope it lightens the mood:

Speaking of Miller, he hasn't played since exiting in the 4th inning June 3rd.

Mudcats currently carrying a two-man bench - catcher Jeferson Quero and second baseman Zack Raabe sat out this one. The infusion of a few college players to Carolina in the 2022 draft is still a ways off.

Carolina batters fanned 15 times. Carolina hurlers K'd 16. My, the game has devolved, hasn't it?

Men in Blue managed only two hits, though they drew nine walks, four by SS Daniel Guilarte.

Four walks thrown by starter Andy Garcia, who struggled in that regard in his rookie season in Maryvale last summer.

We joke about it at times, but Arizona is seriously dealing with early summer heat, serious even for folks very used to it, 112 degrees for this one.

Jose Caballero lined out to center field to open the 10th inning, and the zombie runner was thrown out trying to advance. Tip the cap on the throw, it seems. A first-pitch single ended things quickly in the bottom of the 10th for the walkoff loss.

Stateside debut for recently turned 19-year-old starting RHP and Dominican native Patricio Aquino, who filled his line score. In addition to what you see in the box, he plunked three batters in a very busy three innings.

Another 19-year-old debuted stateside, as Venezuelan Gerson Calzadilla, who was solid with a 1.24 WHIP in his DSL rookie 2021 season, followed Aquino.

RHP Jeison Pena was excellent in his three frames, he's off to a great start in his first two 2022 outings.

The heart of the order at 2-3-4 are exactly the higher-profile players you'd want to succeed, so this box score is pretty in that regard.

But 18-year-old Dominican RHP Darling Solano did not retire any of the six batters he faced in his pro debut, one hit allowed and five walks. But his first name wins the day. Get them next time, Darling.
