  • Freddy Peralta to IL, Brewers Shuffle Pitching

    TL Schwerz

Prior to yesterday’s game against the San Diego Padres, the Milwaukee Brewers placed right-handed pitcher Freddy Peralta on the injured list with a strained right lat muscle. The move was accompanied by a cascading effect among the pitchers.

On top of Peralta being placed on the injured list, Milwaukee also outrighted right-hander Dylan File to the Nashville Sounds. Two new arms join the active roster in the form of righties Trevor Kelley and Miguel Sanchez.

Peralta has made eight starts for Milwaukee this season, and has compiled a 4.42 ERA. His 2.10 FIP suggests he’s dealt with some bad luck, and the 11.6 K/9 is nearly a career high for the talented starter. It’s a disappointing blow as Peralta’s injury is expected to have him shelved for a significant amount of time. Milwaukee will need to figure out contingent plans in the starting rotation.

Both Kelley and Sanchez have been up previously for the Brewers this season. Kelley has worked one inning giving up an unearned run on one hit and striking out one. Sanchez recorded two outs earlier this season.

Milwaukee is leading the NL Central division by two games over the St. Louis Cardinals. Their 26-16 record is impressive, but the calling card of this team has been the dominance of their rotation. While Peralta doesn't have the track record of Corbin Burnes or Brandon Woodruff, it's hard to suggest he won't be missed. With the trade deadline a few months away, look for the Brew Crew to look for the next man up to come from within.

I know Ethan Small got sick last week, and he's starting earlier this week, but could he come up and fill a rotation spot? Could they move Ashby into a permanent (until Peralta is back) rotation spot with maybe Small filling that long-relief/spot starter role? Or, do they just use that spot as a revolving door for the back of the bullpen?

Also, I know File isn't a top prospect, but he is a prospect. Not sure why they felt the need to DFA him, especially with three spots still open on the 40-man roster? Do we think they just thought now was the time? I know he's struggled a bit in Triple-A, but that part of this series of transactions has me wondering.

I really don't understand the current 40-man situation. Signs point to something being in the works but why so many empty spots? It's barely even late May.

Counsell spoke to this last night in a sit down with Adam McCalvy and Sophia Minnaert. The current thinking, at least according to Counsell, is they will now use Ashby as a Fifth Starter. He spoke to, and was obviously aware, this takes him out of his current highly effective bullpen long innings guy. For your reference:

It's interesting timing for sure. Will be interesting overall to see how it plays out here. This is obviously a big injury for the Big Club.

Right, and even if it was full at 40, it sure sounds like Peralta could be put on the 60-Day IL safely.

It worked out for the Brewers. File got through waivers and stays in the organization, which is great... Just seems like a weird risk.

They have a doubleheader Monday in Chicago.  Sunday's starter in St. Louis is TBA.  I'll bet my lunch money that Small starts one of those games.  They get an extra roster spot for Monday, so my guess he goes Monday so it may just be a one off, but if he performs well, he will likely be back up soon taking the role Ashby had as 6th starter/multiple inning reliever.
