Aribitration and injuries

RyDogg66

A quick question. First, Scott Kazmir is having an MRI on his elbow after feeling discomfort while warming up today. It got me to thinking about arbitration and injuries.

Suppose you enter your first arby year (4th year in league) and sign for 2 million dollars, then in spring training that year you blow out an knee or elbow and miss the entire year. You get paid your 2 million, and now you are entering your 2nd arby year (5th year in league). Can you expect a raise in salary if you were to go to arbitration?

The CBA is really ambiguous about this. It sounds like it boils down to what the arbitrators feel like doing after hearing both sides. It says that the arbitrators can consider injuries if they want to.

That’s the only thing Chicago’s good for: to tell people where Wisconsin is.

I think the Prior situation is the best example.

Prior got around $3.5 million for 2007 which was his second arby year which followed an injury plagued 06 in which he earned slightly more than that. So he did take a slight cut. Of course he ended up not pitching at all for Cubs in 07.

This year they wanted him to accept a low ball option year that protected the Cubs if he rebounded this year. He didn't take it and they non-tendered him. So Padres got him for $1 million with a bunch of incentives.
