anyone been to Yankee Stadium?

jason21nl
In July my friends and I will be driving to NY for vacation for a week. While we are there we are going to a Yankees vs Red Sox game at Yankee Stadium. Might take a tour of the park while we are there too. Has anyone been there before? Can you go down by the field before the game like you can at MP? How are the fans? any information would be helpful, thanks.

I was there this past summer against the Tigers (I cheered for the Yankees, kind of, despite hating them with a passion). The stadium itself isn't really in that great of an area, so I wouldn't really want to hang out there all day, though near game time there are a ton of people everywhere.

The game we went to actually had about a 2 hour rain delay, so we were able to pretty much walk anywhere we wanted, if we didn't mind getting wet. Aside from being crowded, I wouldn't think they would stop you from going down by the fiThe fans were a bit obnoxious (we sat in the bleachers) but not overly so. Cubs fans are significantly worse IMO. Though I'm sure all of that goes out the window for a Red Sox game.

I actually had always wanted to go to a game at Yankee Stadium before they tear it down, and I must say I was a big disappointed with the entire thing. I really loved the historic value, but I was really unimpressed with most of it. The food was average at best, all of the walkways just appeared old and rundown. The game itself was great, the stadium...eh, not so much.

Fell free to send me a message if you want any more detailed information.

i used to live out there, so i've been more than a few times. in my experiences the fans in new york tend to be - while often vocal and at times crude - very knowledgeable baseball fans. beware that if you sit in the bleachers you do not have access to the rest of the stadium, a la county stadium. also, sitting in the bleachers will not get you access to the monument park in center field which is rad. however, if you are going bleachers, the aforementioned right field corner is the wildest (beware of a plethora of yankees/american/irish/italian flag tattoo combinations), but left-center will get you a great look into the bullpens despite being a mile from the field.

Yankee Stadium is a great time. . .The Bleacher crowd "calling out" their faves (think "De-rek Je-ter, clap, clap, clap-clap-clap") The food is pretty dreadful, its very expensive, and in a very tough neighborhood. I'd recommend taking the subway in, as that's part of the experience. They do have stadium tours. I have not attended one, but knew some people who really enjoyed the tour. I'd also recommend visiting the Yogi Berra Museum and Learning Center on the campus of Montclair State University in Upper Montclair/Little Falls, NJ.

Whatever you do, do NOT wear a Boston hat, jersey, jacket, etc.--or be prepared to be peppered with beer, insults, and other shenanigans. I attended a playoff game, and watched a guy get his Red Sox hat pulled from his head, have the "B" ripped off, and then have the hat set on fire. It was pretty funny--but it wasn't my hat.

I went to a game there in 1986 against the Crew (Rick Manning and Jim Gantner hit HRs in a 5-4 win). I was 9 at the time. We sat in the left field bleachers, and a guy in the front row was heckling the Yankee leftfielder (Gary Roenicke) the whole game. "I'm gonna get you GAR-Y. I know where you live GAR-Y." I wore my Brewer hat and was not spared the wrath of the locals despite being a kid. I am ashamed to admit that I hid my hat under my shirt when I went to the bathroom. Unforgettable experience. Obviously the experience is a little different there now following the Yankees' success over the past decade plus. The attendance for the game I went to was 22,000 for a Monday night in August.

i was at yankees stadium to see history, they lost 22-0 to the cleveland indians. it was a magical night. i was trying to imagine what that mustve felt like for victor martinez to hit a 3-run HR in the top of the ninth to extend the 19-0 to an insurmountable 22-0. i'm looking forward to see what the new stadiums are gonna be like.
