Anyone attend UW-W between 2001 and present?

jaybird2001wi

Howdy. I am just wondering how much the campus at UW-W has changed since I last took a class there about 2 years ago. I took a break from school for awhile and am going to try going back in September to finally get my degree in journalism (I am about a full semester away credit-wise from getting the degree). But what is going to be really awkward is that I am going to be in classes with 18-19 year old freshmen and I will be 26 by October and I also won't know anyone in my one remaining class for my public relations minor. The only requirements I have left are a one credit "gym class", public relations planning (the remaining class) and a five credit science lab or three credit math class.

The last time I was at UWW was a few years ago when the campus looked like a train wreck (the UC was being renovated or something and the entire center of campus was blocked off).

By the way, if anyone attended UWW between the Spring of 2003 and Fall of 2004, you may remember my lovely sports stories in the Royal Purple as I served as the sports editor of the newspaper.

I'm afraid I don't have anything to offer as far as the UWW experience goes, but I wouldn't let a semester's worth of 'awkwardness' keep you from completing your degree. Chances are, you're never going to see the kids in your classes ever again. Go to class, complete your assignments, and the piece of paper you earn at the end will all be worth it.

grad from UWW in 2000, worked construction for 4 years after that and then went back to school for a designer degree. There really isnt that much of a difference you will notice other then the fact of how stupid and arrogant 18-19 yr old kids can be about the real world.

I have the same question for Mr 3K. I worked in Goodhue for several years myself.

As for the OP, campus looks weird. I'm back as a student this year for the first time after a long layoff, finishing up just like you are. The UC is actually finished and is kind of in the way of everything; I consistently leave it thinking I'll be in front of McGraw and instead am out near the lake somewhere. (minor exaggeration for effect only)

Good luck, dude.

I went to UW-W from 1980-1985 and lived in Fischer for a good chunk of that time, and then off campus on Prairie Street. I graduated, and then never went back.

I did return to the campus a couple of times in the late 90s to attend some events at the performing arts center, but that was about it.

My niece attends school there now. . .

Jaybird, I think you're safe in the "appearing too old to be there" department, as long as Johnny Lechner is still around. . .

Plus, with so many military people returning from service, I would think there would be at least a couple of others there in their mid-twenties.

And even if not, what difference does it make? Do your thing, get your degree and be satisfied with your accomplishment.

I'm there now for my MBA. The new UC is nice, but across from it the new business building i kind of an eyesore. Personal health and fitness is a joke, take it with Brian Borland. Take the 3 credit math class and if you need help come to the math tutoring center where I work.

I'm thinking about going back to school too out here at UNLV. Being 28 years old, I'm sure it will seem a bit strange. At this point in my life though, I am more interested in the actual learning than any awkwardness of the social aspect.

That's kind of crazy that your going back for journalism. I just graduated from the UW-Madison school of journalism in May 2007. It's uhhhh still like college. Bunch of guys, bunch of girls, other people. I'm driving forklift right now for a big cheese factory. I hope your degree does more for you then it did for me. My advice. Write articles for everything. That experience is what it's all about for journalism and college is the best place to get your works published.

You ever see the 'Pat' segment on Saturday Night Live? Maybe that's what he was getting at.

You barely have anything left to take and most are joke classes anyway so it's pretty irrelevant about the class demographics. I agree with the Borland recommendation, now that I think about it I think I didn't even show up for the majority of the classes and got an A. Even if you get a teacher who is strict on their rules and attendence, it's still a joke. Interesting choice between math or science, obviously if you are great at math just take it because it's less class hours but it may be harder due to your layoff. I personally would find a science class more interesting so I would go with that, especially since you barely have to study for them. Obviously stick to Geology, Astronomy, Physical Geography since Chemistry, Biology, etc is a much bigger investment.

If you can, I would recommend taking the lab as satisfactory/no credit. I did that for biology and went to class once every few times and breezed through that class. You get enough points from showing up to labs that you don't need to do too well on the exams to get a satisfactory grade.
