Gallardo: torn cartilage, surgery, out 4 weeks (Latest: Conflicting March 10th reports... what to believe? See reply #98)

Weeks4MVP

According to Rotoworld:

"The Brewers are concerned Yovani Gallardo might have torn cartilage in his right knee.

GM Doug Melvin said Gallardo felt discomfort in the knee after a throwing session a couple of days ago and the knee swelled up afterward. If Gallardo has torn cartilage and needs surgery, he'd require three or four weeks off. That'd put him on the DL for a couple of weeks to begin the season. It wouldn't necessarily be a bad thing for the Brewers. They probably don't want him throwing more than 200 innings in the regular season anyway."

This is not good news. Hopefully it is just some discomfort and nothing serious.

(Note: In reply #98, jvrocksaz notes that as of March 10th, there are conflicting reports as to the status of Yo's injury --1992)

Very true...He may miss both Cubs series if it's 3-4 weeks though.

How do you figure? If they find out he needs surgery then they'll get it done ASAP. We're still 6 weeks away from opening day. You think he's going to miss until late April early May?

He must've spent too much time hanging out with Ben Sheets.

Seriously, hopefully this is nothing major and he'll be able to avoid surgery. If he does have to miss the first couple weeks, at least the Brewers have the pitching depth to stay afloat.

TH has a blog post on this already: http://blogs.jsonline.com/brewers/archive/2008/02/17/gallardo-might-have-knee-injury.aspx

If Gallardo has to have arthroscopic surgery on the knee, Melvin said he'd probably be out of action for two to three weeks. That would leave only three weeks of camp for Gallardo to prepare for the season, which probably would mean he'd start the season on the disabled list.

I'm guessing that's where the "missing the first couple weeks" thing comes in -- the Brewers would want to be sure that he gets a "full" Spring Training before throwing him into the rotation.

Agree with rotoworld. It will be nice to reduce the workload on his arm for the season. Gives Parra a better chance to show if he's a major league quality pitcher. One other thing to remember is during the first month the Crew will not need a 5th starter much. Does make trading Vargas & Cappy harder thou.

The goal is that he is starting for us by April 16th.

What is the over/under for that date? I predict he will make his first start April 29th vs the Cubs.

PS-By the way, I know we really have no idea what date he will come back, but it makes it fun to speculate.
