2008 Nascar, who's ready?

I enjoy racing on my Nascar videogame along with the season. That's about it. I can't stand to sit and watch a whole race. Although, I guess I've watched the end of some races before.

Oh, and I'm in a fantasy racing league on ESPN with a buddy who IS a big NASCAR fan and I feel kinda obligated to do it, since she does the NCAA Hoops Challenge with me.

I can't stand the Nascar marketing machine. It's a shame because my cousin is the girlfriend of Truex Jr. and I have another cousin that works for DEI. I usually will find myself watching the end of Daytona and the road races. And I'll check out to see how the road racers (Montoya, Said, Villenueve, etc.) do against the good ol' boys. Open wheel racing in the U.S. is on life support. Looks like the Champ Cars will be bankrupt or will merge with the IRL. Or both. Either way there will still be many hurdles to clear in order to make open wheel racing matter again in this country. The ALMS is a series to keep an eye on. The cars are the stars in sports car racing. Manufacturers actually compete among one another with technology they develop. And the manufacturers are delving deep into alternative fuel technologies. The technology on today's race cars will be the technology used on the cars we drive tomorrow. Unlike Nascar's joke "Car Of Tomorrow" which has about as much technology as what people drove back in the 70s. Nascar finally converted to the use of unleaded fuel for this year. Whoopie!!! Go see the ALMS race when they come to Road America in Elkhart Lake this summer. You won't regret it. You'll be hooked when you hear those huge Corvette V8s roaring as they come out of the woods and into turn 5. Last year's race was a classic. The little Porsche P2 prototype held off the big bad Audi diesels for the last hour of the race. Formula 1 starts in less than a month. It has huge problems as well. Most in part due to the greed of Bernie Eccelstone. But it's the only series I watch religiously. I'll be heading to Montreal in June because Indy is out this year. Anyone else going to any races this year?

I had a buddy of mine a few years back try to explain to me how great it was, and how exciting it was....I tried, and couldn't get into it. I guess I just need a sport that has a ball and something to do with it to score points or runs. Soccer doesn't really appeal to me much, but I'll watch that before NASCAR. I would watch football, baseball, golf, basketball, hockey, soccer and then any racing. But that's me.

Fantasy Snowblowing?

It would be easy pickings this year. I'd just have to choose 5 of you guys and I'd easily win, according to the "Winter is Back" thread!

I know what I said, but I figured, since there not a whole lot interesting sports-wise on TV, I'd flip on Daytona. Especially with living in Texas, I should get acquainted. When did it turn into the Super Bowl with cheesy tribute concerts and crap 3 hours before the race starts? And when does the race itself start?

edit: Guess it wasn't as Super Bowl-esque. They're getting ready to start now.

The pre-race was extra long because it's the 50th running of Daytona. I liked seeing the "parade" of cars, showing what race cars have looked like during the past 50 years. And yes, I'm watching the race, although not steadily. I did some school work, looking up every so often to see what was happening.

Just thought I would bump this thread because they are going to be actually trying to finish this race starting at 1 am. Pretty crazy but I guess they are on the west coast where it is "only" 11 pm. It seems pretty stupid to me to make guys race this late. Has this happened before in NASCAR and what is the point? Is it unfair to just start up again tomorrow?

Live on said west coast, and I was shocked when the 10pm news anchor announced that they were pre-empting the NASCAR with their broadcast. My only guess is that it'd be really expensive to shut it all down tonight, and then get everything back up & running tomorrow. Stupid to not wait 'til tomorrow.
