Devin Harris, pack your bags... Kidd to Mavs

jaybird2001wi

It appears that Jason Kidd will be going back to the team he started his career with as the Mavs are sending Harris and Jerry Stackhouse, among others to the Nets for Kidd.

This deal actually could make the Nets much better as they are receiving more solid players for Kidd and Harris along with Stackhouse teaming up with Vince Carter could make the Nets much better.

Included in the article you linked:

The Nets are expected to buy out Stackhouse's contract immediately, which could enable him to re-sign with Dallas if he waits 30 days,

"His whole life is a fantasy camp. People should plunk down $2000 to live like him for a week. Sleep, do nothing, fall ass-backwards into money, mooch food off your neighbors and have sex without dating... THAT'S a fantasy camp."

yeah when i saw the trade, i thought it didn't make much sense for the mavs. They are giving up a young pg and a 1st along with spare parts and expiring contracts for a pg that is at the end of his control. He seems to be performing at a high level this year but his still 35. There are a lot of teams in the west that are definitely in a win now mode.

So the Mavs are in win now mode, just like the Suns. Kidd is still a great player but D-HA looks like he will be a good player for a long time to come. So they are willing to part with the future for today. I guess I cannot blame a team who 2 years ago were on their way to beating the heat when they collapsed, then last year totally fell apart against the Warriors in the first round. So I imagine they are going to go for it all now.

It is so crazy what the Gasol trade did to the West, it brought Shaq to the Suns and Kidd to the Mavericks. What is strange is Gasol was on the block almost all of last year, so if an NBA team wanted him over the last year and a half they could have had him. When I look at it that way I think, well maybe it would have been better if the Suns would have made a deal with Memphis to get Gasol, or the Mavs. It just seems that reactionary trades are the order of the day.

Nets get:

Harris

Maurice Ager

Diop

2 Expiring Contracts (George, Diop)

2 First Round Picks (2008 and 2010)

for:

Kidd

Malik

Some 7ppg bench forward

2nd round pick.

seriously, Devin for Kidd is a steal for the Nets if they can lock up harris for more than 3 years. throw in the salary cap room and a couple late first rounders and it's a RIP OFF.

i'm slightly biased on this deal... since i'm a childhood pal of devin, but still.... WOW

This is Jason Kidd we're talking about. Dude is 2 rebounds a night away from AVERAGING a triple double every single game, this year at age 34.

Devin Harris is a good young player, but obviously the Mavericks are in win now mode, as they are every year. I think it's even safe to say that Harris, being the 5th overall pick, has been a bit of a disappointment so far. But he is just 24.

I liked the Shaq trade for the Suns, but Kidd isn't even close to a broken down big man. This is hardly highway robbery for the Nets. It's a trade that might get both teams to where they want to get to, but to act like Dallas isn't getting a GREAT player right now, let alone for the last 12 years is a bit much.

EDIT: And Harris is locked up for five more years.

Kidd is still a good player, but the fact he's shooting a miserable 36% from the field and nearly 4 turnovers a game is part of the reason the Nets with Kidd/Carter/Jefferson are owners of one of the NBA's worst offenses. Harris is also a better defender than Kidd is an he shoots 47% from the field.

I understand why the Mavs wanted to make this move if it goes through because they feel with their current roster that they can't get out of the West by standing pat. I'm just not sure this would be the move to get done their goal to win a ring. Diop is a terrible offense player, but he was clearly their best post defender and with all the quality bigs in the West, losing him would hurt more than his meager stats would suggest. Stackhouse was/is a high quality bench option and two first round picks were thrown in by the Mavs.

Maybe Kidd would start shooting better and cutting his turnovers by playing on a team where he could win a ring, or maybe father time is creeping in somewhat even though he obviously still passes and rebounds exceptionally well.

So George blocks the trade and then proceeds to shoot 0-11 from the field and 0-2 from the line last night in 33 minutes. What an idiot. If he doesn't change his mind, it would be great to see him play about 2 minutes per game from now on.

Apparently, not actually a no-trade clause. From the updated ESPN article:

Although Kobe Bryant is the only player in the league with a specific no-trade clause in his contract, league rules dictate that players on a one-year contract -- but who also ended last season with the same team and are thus eligible for Early Bird or full Larry Bird free-agent rights at the end of the contract -- cannot be traded without their consent.

But George would figure to face an uncomfortable future with his teammates, coaches and bosses if he does prevent Kidd's return by staying with the Mavs, which has some team insiders optimistic that the 30-year-old will eventually accept his move to New Jersey. It might already be uncomfortable for George with Mavs fans, some of whom booed and heckled him during the late stages of an 0-for-11 shooting night in Dallas' 96-76 win over the Blazers after news of George's stance began to spread.

Why in the world is George creating ill will and hatred by his own fans for being so dumb as to block a deal to send him to New Jersey? Is he that dumb? He isn't exactly the centerpiece of the deal and yet I am dumbfounded as to why he is being dumb.

George said: "Fans were like, 'C'mon, what are you doing? Stop it. You're holding things up. ... Quit being selfish. C'mon, we want Kidd.'"

And this quote from his agent takes the cake: Before his flight to Dallas, Bartelstein told ESPN.com by phone: "We're not trying to block anything. The issue is that if he agrees to this deal, he has to give up his Bird rights. To lose that tool in today's world of free agency is a difficult thing to do."

First off, what team in their right mind would even pay a man who has averaged a shade under six points a game since 1999? Not to mention he has averaged 18 minutes a game. George is being an idiot. He is not good at all and yet he thinks he is.

Look at his fabulous stats: http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/players/stats?playerId=267

Precisely. To be fair to George, what does his agent mean by "Bird rights"? Is he attempting to suggest that the Mavs would go over their salary cap to re-sign a marginal player?

How can you say Harris is a disappointment? He's averaging nearly 15ppg, 5apg this season.... in an offense that doesn't even showcase the PG. The Mavericks offense in a nutshell: slowly bring the ball up the floor, pass it to Dirk or Howard, isolate defense... take jumpshot, hope Dampier gets offensive board. Occasionally run the pick and roll.

Not to mention Harris is one of the best defensive PGs in the Western Conference. I guess no one remembers how he locked Tony Parker down to get to the Finals 2 seasons ago. The only reason they didn't beat the Heat was because Dwayne Wade was getting EVERY call under the sun... Harris was shutting him down for the most part, it's easy for someone to score 30 pts when he takes 20 shots and goes to the like 15-20 times a game.

If this deal eventually goes through, I don't expect the Mavs to make it to the Conference Semifinals.

I can play some devil's advocate here.

I don't understand how people can rip on Devean George for not wanting to go through the huge hassle of moving because he got traded against his wishes. I don't blame the guy, I'm willing to guarantee he's not doing this because he thinks he's a good player, but to do what's perfectly in his rights to stay in Dallas. People in Dallas who want to blame him should realize that Jason Kidd is extremely old and thank George for keeping him away. And Devin Harris definitely is at least as good of an option as Kidd. What Kidd brings in assists, he completely offsets with his terrible shooting percentage. Harris still has a very good A/T ratio and can score/shoot. Throw in the fact that he's a lot younger than Kidd, and this trade would be stupid if it were straight up, much less with all the other stuff Dallas threw in.
