Don Money upset at Gallardo

molitor fan

From the most recent link report:

After Michael Coleman hot-dogged in a home run celebration, he was hit by a Gallardo pitch on his next at-bat, causing both benches to empty for a benign testosterone exhibition.

It's a toss-up who was more angered by the Coleman incident - the victim or Money.

"It was obvious. I knew it was coming," said Coleman. "Just don't throw at my damn head. I knew I was getting hit."

Especially after Gallardo buzzed him twice inside before making contact.

Money held a long, closed-door meeting after the game, upset by the way Gallardo handled it.

"We just told them that's not the way you play the game," Money said. "A guy hits a homer, pimps or dances or does what he does, then throw it tight. But don't try it three times and you don't try it three times."

Money said it was "part of learning the game at this level" for the 20-year-old Gallardo, who gave up five hits and three runs in six innings.

It's good to see that Gallardo has the same kind of fire that Inman has. That fire is part of what will make them special pitchers. Three times may have been a bit much, but I have no problem with him sending a message to a hot dog.

I think the message from Money was, if you are going to hit him, do it on the first pitch. Or, if you want to send a message by buzzing him, do it on the first pitch.

But don't do it three times.

I think that's a reasonable request.

Chris

Good. He should throw at a guy I'm completely and entirely for that. Baseball is loseing some of it's luster with people afraid to do certain things.

Biggest thing that stuck out to me in that article was that Gallardo gave up three runs...

I agree. Look at it this way... a pitch for a run. He shoulda hit three guys!

I get why Money wasn't happy and even agree Gallardo should have been talked to abou thow to go about hitting someone. That being said Coleman knew he was going to get buzzed for hotdogging it so why should he be mad about it? It's a pretty simple decision from his perspective. Run the bases like a professional or hot dog it and take the consequenses. Instead of getting angry because it took three pitches or it was higher than you thought acceptable just act like you should.

Doesn't the fact that he has dominated every level he's pitched at already show that he has "competitive fire", how about the fact that he is a professional baseball player?

Stuff like this is so archaic. It's unprofessional and immature. Especially the fact that he did it in the minor leagues, where you could completely alter the course of a young man's life with one poorly located "beanball". This isn't the big leagues where it's multi-millionaires facing millionaires.

I remember Sheets blatantly throwing at Bonds a few years ago. It happens. I have no problem with it. But pitchers in general have no control over when they'll get ejected for it. if I throw at someone, and get warned. That batter will know I can't throw at him again. So he'll be ready to swat one. Of course, there's the Julian Tavarez approach with Matheny, where you just bean him every single time.

"Don Drysdale would consider an intentional walk a waste of three pitches. If he wants to put you on base, he can hit you with one pitch."

-- Mike Shannon

IMO baseball needs more of that. The game has sorta lost it's attitude and is not just catering to hitters like they're the only thing that matters. I have no problem with a pitcher throwing at a guy for whatever reason. Simply because he wants to, or because he wants to protect his teammates. Drysdale also said that if someone brushed back 2 of his guys, he'd buzz 4 of theirs. Pitchers with more attitude would be good for the game.

I'd pay money to see someone with a Sheetslike fastball or better just throw one directly into Bonds' knee or head.

On A Side note. What do you thnk would have happened if Sammy Sosa did that little jump thing, or Barry Bonds did that stare after the ball thing, and Bob Gibson was on the mound, or Koufax, or Drysdale? The next ball would have been at his face.

like I said, he has. Two or three years ago (the first time I saw Sheets throw at someone, but not the last), he threw a 97 mph heater behind Bonds' butt/lower back. How did I know it was intentional? Because the next three pitches, the catcher was standing with his left arm extended out.

Throwing at a guy's butt is different than hitting a guy "in the head". What is this, professional wrestling? Seriously, you'd advocate hitting a guy in the head with a fastball?

All I'm saying is how about showing your dominance and superiority over a hitter by striking him out? Gallardo's got nothing to prove in AA - he should just dominate, junk like throwing at guys is beneath him. I said earlier - you can completely alter the course of a guy's life by hitting him in the head in AA. And what for? How can you be "shown up" when there's hardly a crowd and none other than minor league fans even know there's a game?
