Ways to make some cash...

sheetswannabe
I had a friend who did Covance studies all the time even after college. All the testing is for stuff that has been governmentally approved. The worst part about it you are holed up in the place he whole time. But you can bring a laptop, cell phone etc. So its not like you re locked up or anything. If I had more time I would totally do it.

Go to a temp agency, such as Spherion or any other one like them. They are always waiting to give people jobs of just about any type. Look at it this way - it is their job to get you a job. It's an easy way to get a foot in at a new company.

I was actually hired on as a temp at Harley-Davidson back in 2002; they liked how I worked as a temp and then hired me on as a full-time official employee. So basically just because you start as a temp doesn't mean it has to end that way.

Good luck.

In regards to Covance studies - most of them have happy endings and they pay very well.

However, I had a friend who did a pretty long one in Madison years ago. He ended up in the Hospital in really bad shape for a couple days. And I mean really bad shape.

Trust me, the only thing in this life worth a darn is your health. Don't risk it by selling yourself to science.

I was his age once. I also had a part-time job around that time. I found that I always got a refund in excess of what he needs for his trip.

There is an earned income tax credit or something like that which will help anyone who makes under ~12K/yr, which may or may not be the case.

Assuming you get a refund!

As bullox said, he's probably in a situation where he at least won't have to pay additional money in.

And more importantly, all he has to do this year is file his return by April 15th and he'll get a $600 check in May or June.

my father did the Covance thing once. when he did it, there were levels of the drug/test that you could sign up for, and what they paid depended on what you were willing to put up with sick-wise. you were somewhat confined, but you could do whatever in the room because they were just testing the effect of the drug. one person would get the placebo. at least in his study, the lower-paying groups ended up mildly sick, while the higher-paying groups pretty much wretched most of the time. you'd think it'd be sweet to be the placebo guy because you don't get sick, but then every sick person hated you. the father did one of the lower-end studies and said it wasn't too bad.

i've done the temp agency stuff before, and you can just tell them you're only available weekends or nights to do extra work. they'll call you about jobs, whether it's one-day stuff or longer, and you can just decline whatever work you don't feel like doing. i did some longer-term work helping out at a college bookstore (even got a promotion ahead of the regular employees, who were jealous of me thereafter), and did some day-stuff like filling in for a secretary who was sick and some inventory stuff. it's all idiot work.
