Pedro Martinez: Rooster-Fighter....

RyDogg66

It doesnt sound as good as ----fighting, but lets keep it clean for the kids, right?

So anyway, YouTube video surfaced yesterday with Pedro and Juan Marichal releasing two roosters to fight to the death, in The Dominican Republic (where it is legal, sorry Ron Mexico) and Marichal's rooster kills Pedro's Rooster. Here is the Deadspin Link.

The comments sections, as always, is hilarious. My favorite was the guy who said that wasnt a rooster that PEdro released, it was Nelson De La Rosa dressed in a rooster costume. Comments are PG-13 for the play-on-words effect.

I think it's pretty barbaric regardless of whether it's legal, same as dog-fighting, but the hypocrisy is always interesting. I'm a meat-eater, and I'm sure most of the beef and chicken I eat have been kept in worse conditions than these roosters.

Additionally, the only gambling I really enjoy is playing the dogs and the horses. Yeah, they aren't killed in the process, but I always feel there's something vaguely exploitative about it, especially at the dogtracks and the smaller horsetracks. Maybe exploitative isn't the word for it, but I'm always wary of mistreatment and disrespect.

It's interesting that this is becoming a story. While barbaric, it's legal. I guess that doesn't make it morally right, but that's not the issue. People want to compare it to Vick and dogfighting, but they're not getting that the biggest reason Vick is being punished for his transgression is because he lied to the Feds, which is worse than actually committing crimes, as far as the law is concerned.

I really hope that this doesn't cause a concerted effort on our (America's) part to intervene to change laws in someone else's country. People protest going to war to stop human rights violations, but are all aboard the minute a rooster is being treated inhumanely. That's twisted logic, as far as I'm concerned.

Dogs are furry pets that people have special bonds with, most do not own pet roosters. I don't think the two are an exact apples-apples comparison. My only question is if one of the roosters was Little Jerry Seinfeld?

I am equally outraged at both of these events. I am also outraged at japanesebugfights. I would love to have everyone respect life, all forms but that will never be the case. I am officially a hypocrite as well as I love me some meat.

In the end we just got to let people figure out what works for them. If they sleep well at night and it's not against the law, then that's that.

cockfighting=dogfighting without the thought of laws being broken

Cockfighting does not = dogfighting, not in our culture. We keep dogs as pets and never eat them. We eat chicken all the time, and in fact, chicken factories where we get eggs from are way worse than what these roosters go through, and none of us seem to have a problem with it.

I use to have fun watching roosters fight when I was a kid. One would usually backdown within a minute or I'd break it up if it got too rough. Why do I feel a "you might be a redneck" joke is going to be directed at me!

This begs the qustion about America's double standards. The media is all over pedro's case, but given a free las vegas 2-3 night stay, I'm sure they would take it and gamble to their heart's content and never report their winnings. Gambling is illegal, unless you are in an Indian reservation casino. naturalism is frowned upon in the US, but it not illegal to be natural in europe. and the paparazi are going to be there to take your celebritiy's au naturale picture and reveal it in some adult magazine or web site. There are some drugs in europe that help fight aids, but the US FDA has not approved their sale in the US. So Americans with aids go over to Europe to take their life saving drugs.

I didn't like pedro much to begin with after what he said about milwaukee and refusing to play in the all star game here. if he wants to go to a chicken fight, so be it. it's right up there with going to a girls night club until 3:00 Am on the road while being married. I pass this off as poor judgement - found often in many athletes, entertainers and businessmen. I'm more dispointed with Juan Marichal. I had respect for him. he should have known better. You have to know this type of stuff has been going on for the last 20,000 years. i can just see the fun times chickens had on Noah's ark.

so.. do they eat the loser? or do they eat the winner? Now I know where those little drumsticks with the broken leg bones come from.
