Braun next season

Braun has certainly answered pretty much every question I had about his bat which I am rather happy about. My guess is he will be a pretty fair long shot to make the major league club and will stay in AAA until the Brewers feel his D is adequate enough for the majors. I'd really be suprised if he was in AAA for any more then half a season before being called up.

Hypothetical: Koskie can't come back, but Hardy comes back strong, with Hall starting at 3B.

Do you move Hall to CF or Braun to a corner OF spot? I would imagine Braun would be the one to be moved, given Halls superior defense.

Barring a PHENOMINAL AFL/Spring showing he'll probably start the year at AAA.

It'll be a combination of his AFL/spring plus Hardy and Koskie's health. If Koskie comes back healthy and ready to roll, that'll help the Brewers keep Braun at AAA for awhile since they'll have 2 better options for now in Hall and Koskie. Likewise, a good/healthy showing by Hardy means Hall can play 3rd and a little SS with help at 3B from Koskie.

However, if one or both of these guys can't make it, and Braun shows even more improvement, he could crack the opening day roster.

I'd love to have that problem next year. Personally, I'd rather not waste Braun at a corner spot. I think overall, it's better to move Billy to CF, his numbers there look just as amazing as they do at short, and Braun'll probably be fine at 3b, even if he's not quite as good as Hall would be.

There are other who know more about TGJ than I do, but I was a bit disturbed by his misplays in center field during that brief time he was up. I would rather see Bill Hall out there. He would probably have some misplays too, but he has some power. We have Weeks to bat lead-off. I hope that Braun gets an opportunity to win a spot out of Spring Training. I don't want to see us send him down just because it is easy to do. I want to see us assemble our team that is supposed to challenge for the play-offs and let them play. He will have to be a rookie sometime. Again, I have not seen Braun play. I don't know what he needs to work on. If he has some plate discipline and defensive fundamentals then I think that they should bring him up.

I don't really want to see anyone up on the major league roster to learn anymore. That era should be past. They should only be called up when ready. At this point I think Braun needs more work on defense. If he doesn't make it up until 08 or 09 so be it. At his position there are plenty of major league ready players on the team for next year. Barring several injuries he should be in AAA all next year. Or until he proves he is completely ready. However long that takes.

Why?

Because TGJ is a natural Centerfielder and leadoff hitter. Something that we are severely lacking. Sure Weeks filled in well in a pinch but that is not what he is projected at for the rest of his career. He can find more of his power stroke batting further down in the lineup. Personaly I think adding Gwynns speed to the lineup every day is vital. He's going to hit .290, play good defense, and steal 30+ bases every season. Sure he's not going to have a high OPS but thats not his game! Add in Weeks and Hart's speed everyday and you have a pretty fast team with pop.

Billy Hall is going to play somewhere 4-5 days a week. Everyone is always worried and says that he needs a position. I think it's bs. If Hall makes a start once a week at 3rd, short, second, and CF then it would be perfect. You know that someone is going to go down for at least a few weeks here and there and he is going to get extended playing time at that position.

Personaly I think Hall makes our team a hell of a lot better when he doesnt have a set position then when he does. Can you imagine how many teams would kill to have a Billy Hall that can play 4 positions that well?

The biggest question I have about Gwynn is his OBP. Can he get on base at a high enough rate to be a productive leadoff hitter.

A 360 AAA OBP isn't terrible, but I don't think it makes him a lock to leadoff next year in Milwaukee.

how do you then find out if a player will be able to cut it or not at the major league level? you have to have people on the roster to learn, just hopefully we are past the time where it seems like half of the roster is trying to learn. look at the white sox, they brought up their CF Anderson to learn this year, but they have enough other good players, they are able to wait it out and let him develop, i hope that's what the brewers are planning on doing as well

Clancy I can appreciate a certain perspective on what you wrote, but why would you just write oof Koskie and release him? He was one the few guys we had who played outstanding defense and he hit very well when he was out there? I'm not counting on him for next year, but he was an asset for the team in everyway at the least someone should be willing to trade for him with a clean bill of health.
