A very interesting trade deadline in which we can (hopefully) load up for next season right away. It's not ideal, but at least it will be trading for 2009 help rather than 2012 help.

Just to give everyone at least a glimmer of hope, here are the standings as of one year ago today, the morning of 5/8/2007:

 NL East Team Name G W L T PCT GB RS RAAtlanta Braves 31 19 12 0 .613 - 157 140New York Mets 31 19 12 0 .613 - 165 113Florida Marlins 31 14 17 0 .452 5.0 164 169Philadelphia Phillies 32 14 18 0 .438 5.5 158 160Washington Nationals 32 9 23 0 .281 10.5 94 164NL CentralTeam Name G W L T PCT GB RS RAMilwaukee Brewers 32 22 10 0 .688 - 160 127Chicago Cubs 29 15 14 0 .517 5.5 142 108Houston Astros 31 14 17 0 .452 7.5 132 131Cincinnati Reds 32 14 18 0 .438 8.0 151 144Pittsburgh Pirates 30 13 17 0 .433 8.0 104 145St. Louis Cardinals 30 12 18 0 .400 9.0 92 146NL WestTeam Name G W L T PCT GB RS RALos Angeles Dodgers 32 19 13 0 .594 - 141 117San Diego Padres 32 18 14 0 .563 1.0 143 123San Francisco Giants 31 17 14 0 .548 1.5 141 129Arizona Diamondbacks 34 18 16 0 .529 2.0 134 136Colorado Rockies 32 14 18 0 .438 5.0 139 165 [/pre]

None of the teams in first place actually made the playoffs while Rockies and Phillies were 14-18. This doesn't mean the Brewers are better off this season, just that they aren't completely out of it.

edit: I have no idea how to format this correctly.

In a word: Humility.

Though this is a tough stretch for both team and fan I think that a silver lining may be a little humbling of Prince, Braun, and some of the other young guys. I don't think that they're arrogant guys (well, Braun maybe) from what we see of them, but perhaps this season has been a lesson for the young guys on the team: no matter what you think of your talent or what others tell you about your talent, this game will humble you.

Perhaps all these young guys have just been craving a bit of perspective. Maybe they're paying attention now.

Yost mentioned Week's BABIP during the post game interview today, that made me very happy. Weeks still pops out too much but he has gotten a ton of outs on hard hit balls this year, way more than he should have. His AVG is mostly a fluke so far, he should be hitting in the .250 range or so and when you add in the BB's that is a .370ish OBP.

HP ump Paul Schrieber really had a solid strikezone tonight. That was a nice change of pace. I don't have TiVO, but I thought the call Molina threw his temper-tantrum on was borderline.

How about some credit to Yost for a nicely managed game. 8 runs scored, he must have put the players in a position to succeed, right?

Actually a nicely managed series. They took 3 of 4 from the Cards, had to have done something right in there somewhere.

And he didn't let LaRussa get to him. LaRussa was actually the one to melt down this time.

Well OK...it wasn't really a melt down, he was just trying to protect his player, but still, he did get run.

Blame the manager when the players fail, how about a little credit back to the manager when the players do their job well.

Yeah, Yost did a nice job to get Bush out of there before a big inning... for once. It felt nice, but then again, so did scoring 8 runs. It's funny how a pitcher is able to relax & trust his stuff when he knows that the game can't change on one pitch. I doubt there's any sabermetric stuff to back this up, but I've always felt like it must be easier to pitch well when you know the other team isn't breathing right down your neck.

About 40 games into the season...

The Crew is last in the NL Central in runs scored and 50+ runs behind the ScRubs.

But somehow only 3 games out, above .500, and right in the middle of the pack.

Had you told me that stuff at the beginning of the year, I'd have said you were crazy for two reasons.

One, there is no way this team will be last in runs scored. Two, if they are, no way are they only 3 games out or above .500.

The Yost thread was not immediately bumbed to the top after last night's game. Rather, people are approprsaitely directing their venom at those who desereve it - namely, Fielder and Mota.
