Lake Mendota Ice Quake

hawing

Link from UW-Madison News

If you were near the Lake Mendota shore on the UW-Madison campus a little before 1:00 Thursday, you might have felt a tremor caused by shifting ice.

Somehow, I didn't, despite being in the center of the Union Rathskeller eating lunch. At my workplace, across the street, some staff felt it and some didn't.

A colleague in the center of our big reading room said it felt like being on a trampoline for a moment.

This month has really been full of odd natural events.

Remember: the Brewers never panic like you do.

UW-Madison geology Prof. Cliff Thurber estimates today's brief tremor at less than 0.2 on the Richter scale -- enough to be noticed, but well short of calamity.

0.2?!? I think your friend might've been exaggerating just a bit about feeling like they were on a trampoline!

I work in Ingraham Hall, and we were having a staff meeting. When the "quake" hit, we thought that a bus had run into the building. (They sort of zoom by on Observatory Drive.) There is a kind of glass display case in the room where we were meeting, and its windows really shook.

I was in the Law Building and we felt a slight shake - prof didn't even notice, I don't think.

I went to Memorial Union afterward and people in the Hoofer office (where I work - in the basement) were trying to figure out what happened, because they apparently really shook. Same story from the Red Gym.
