Top 10 of Wisconsin

jaybird2001wi
How does Kohler make this list? Believe it or not Lambeau Field crushes the amount of people that stay at the Kohler resorts -- and it's not close.
Green Bay's on there though. And the list isn't in any order. I was going more by what I'd tell somebody from out of town to go visit, not just number of people who visit each year.

Wait, we're talking about Janesville here?!?

Rotary Gardens (one of the most outstanding public gardens in the midwest), 2 movie theaters, 5 bowling alleys, 3 golf courses, (5 more within 5 miles of town), The Armory, Janesville Performing Arts Center, more public parks than you can shake a stick at, lots of public fishing spots. Not to mention, tons of bars that cater to anyone's tastes. Many restaurant options.

If you're looking for strip clubs, I guess you're out of luck, if that's your thing. There's an alcohol free strip club by GM. I'm just wondering what type of entertainment someone is looking for if they say there's nothing to do in this town.

I'm not saying the place is a mecca of entertainment and dining, but to say 4th worst in the state? I'm going to defend the place to the last unless the OP comes up with a valid argument for why it's such a terrible place.

Aren't Milwaukee East side and Milwaukee Brady and Farwell the same thing?

i was thinking the same thing. and they arent the overly nicest neighborhoods in milwaukee either.

the east side drops off rather quickly once you cross humboldt

I live on Farwell on the East side -- they are the same thing in my book. And yes, it isn't the nicest area -- I was recently mugged near the UWM campus, which is supposed to be "safe".

I still fail to see what was so bad about this.http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif

yeah, i lived in Fort Atkinson for two years. it wasn't anything special of a city, but you have to factor in the fact that Madison is only :45 away, so i'd pretty much always be there for something to do. plus if you know where to look you can still find dollar tappers, and that alone has to take it out of the running for worst. also Miller Park is :45 minutes away, too, so not a terrible drive to still catch a night game.

man, i can't believe i just defended Fort Atkinson, a place i was still happy to move out of.

ah, Fort Atkinson, 45 minutes away from everything, and 5 minutes away from nothing at all.

I'll bite. Here's my Top 10 lists. I may not agree with some of the list (like Spring Green tourist area being better than Miller Park), but is is probably the realistic.

Top 10 tourist attractions/events:

1) Wisconsin Dells
2) Door County
3) Summerfest
4) Badger Football Saturdays
5) Packers Sundays
6) Milwaukee: The City of Festivals
7) Spring Green area: House on the Rock, American Player's Theatre, Taliesin
8) Miller Park
9) State Street in Madison
10) Warrens Cranberry Festival

Top 10 Greatest Athletes of All-Time:

I'l skip this one

Top 5 Best Cities/Spots for people under 30:
1) Madison
2) Milwaukee
3) La Crosse
4) Appleton
5) Oshkosh

Top 10 Worst Cities:
1) Township of Madison
2) Racine
3) North side of Milwaukee
4) Kenosha
5) Kohler (The SMUG factor is out of control)
6) Lone Rock (Welcome to Lone Rock, population: Desparation and despair)
7) Kaukauna (The smell would drive me out of town in 2 minutes)
8) Rosendale
9) Adams-Friendship
10) Superior (Although I went to college here, the long winters and vast number of bars = One of the highest alcoholic rates per capita in the USA

I like Janesville. I'm probably 10 miles closer to Madison than Janesville, but I'll make the longer drive to Janesville. Less crowds, and no gangbangers in the mall.

Hawing is strangely missing from this thread.

Thank you for mentioning this area. This area is beautiful and the APT is fantastic. Those that have been there would agree.

I'm quite suprised that no one has mentioned the Wausau area for either good or bad. I find it is sort of the gateway to the Northwoods, which would be in my top 10 for tourist attractions. I lived up there for a summer and quite enjoyed it (Wausau that is).

A good city for people under 30 is Oshkosh -- pretty lively party nights.

I guess it's just cos I moved from Oshkosh to the Twin Cities that by comparison I remember Oshkosh as being dull, but I remember Oshkosh as being dull. I do love The Magnet, tho.

Oshkosh is still pretty dull. I suppose if you like the house party scene, it can be kinda cool. The jazz scene is picking up in the area, too.

Never been a fan of the Magnet, though...I go across the street to Peabody's Ale House. Especially on Sunday nights for the Jazz Orgy.

Ratch and Deb's makes a pretty good pie too. If they're still there.

It's still there. Just had it about 2 weeks ago, and still delicious http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif

If I had Braun's pee in my fridge I'd tell everybody.

I've spent a lot of time vacationing in my state, as there's so much to do just about everywhere. The list of cities that I found the most interesting or had the most interesting attractions....

(in no particular order)

Milwaukee. Yes, the place can be dangerous, the crime rate is up there, yada yada, but the fact is there's a lot to do.

Sturgeon Bay. Door County gets all the pub, yet Sturgeon Bay alone is a great place to spend a weekend.

Madison. I don't care for a lot of things about Madison, but if you're looking to be entertained, there's no shortage.

Minocqua/Woodruff. Fun for a few days, and longer if you're into the outdoors. The zoo (wildlife park, if you please) is a lot of fun, very hands on. Feeding the bears can't be beat.

Wausau/Rib Mountain. Again, if you like the outdoors, this area offers a lot.

Oshkosh/Appleton/Fox Vally. I lump all this together personally, as it's one big metro area. Plenty to do, regardless of what you like.

The small towns get a bad rap as being "boring", but by definition, there's not going to be a lot to do in small towns. If you get a Wisconsin Spring/Summer event guide, you'll find something to do every weekend for every taste. Festivals, fairs, auto shows, cheese fests, you name it, there's something going on SOMEWHERE every weekend, and it's easy to find. I just think unless a city has a brutal crime rate or huge unemployment, a list of "worst" cities is extraordinarily subjective, as most towns over 20,000 people have most of the same stuff, give or take a few tourist attractions. Just about everywhere in Wisconsin is within a half hour drive from something fun to do, unless you're a complete deadhead.

As far as "worst"......you can have the Dells. That place lost it's charm sometime after I turned about 18. Insane traffic, $9 mini golf, and the Ducks just don't excite me.

I spent 2 months working in Racine as a cable sweep tech, and in that 2 months I had a knife pulled on me by a guy who thought I was an undercover cop, I had a Subway worker offer me crack, I had a 45+ year old woman (I think) offer me sex for free cable, and I had several people refuse to allow access to utilities, to the point where the last 5 weeks I had to have a constant police escort. Problems that I didn't have in Milwaukee, even in the worst areas. It seemed in Milwaukee that even if someone was or wasn't up to no good, they weren't interested in me, and that was fine. I can safely say that if I planned on moving somewhere else in Wisconsin, Racine would be dead last on my list.

My Top 10 current Wisconsinite athletes (no particular order):

Devon Harris

Mark Tauscher

Andrew Rock

Paul Hamm

Morgan Hamm

Jeff Nygaard

Chellsie Memmel

Leslie Osborne

Steve Stricker

I'm reaching for one more, so I'll say Matt Kenseth

On edit: the Northwoods needs to be represented, so I'll throw in Anna DeForge.

I'm thinking outside the box with that one. Feel free to add.

jaybird: your all-time list is incomplete without Eric Heiden. I'd say he's #3 behind Favre and Aaron.

The violence, for the most part, is contained to places where you're never going to be if you're visiting. The chances of being a victim of a random crime while visiting are pretty much nil.

9) Appleton (somehow weird crimes and unsolved homicides occur here)

I moved to Appleton over 10 years ago and barely remember a murder, much less unsolved or any weird crimes for that matter.

Fond du Lac should move to #1 worst city. Spend any amount of time there and you will reach the same conclusion. They have more guys over 30 who still want to fight than any town in the country.
