How does one make a change?

jaybird2001wi

I hate to sound like George Costanza here, but here it goes: "I am single, 25 and live with my parents."

For a long time I have been thinking of moving to another state or even a new city for that matter. Racine is not getting better, I wouldn't be opposed to moving to the western Chicago suburbs or maybe the Ohio Valley region (Cincy, Dayton and my best friend lives in Cincinnati right now). But the thing is, all I need is to find a job at the new place where I plan to move. Any ideas?

Do you have money saved up? I know from experience that it's probable that you'll blow through a bunch of money, be massively in debt in no time, and be even more depressed than you currently are. If you're just looking to get out of the house, you might as well move somewhere else in SE Wisconsin or northern Illinois. Do you think you might want to work in Chicago? It all depends.

I would first seek employment in the other town, wherever that may be. You may get called for an interview, which would give you a chance to visit the place to see if it could work for you.

I'm with gypcasino in making sure your financial house is in order before making the move. I would save enough to make sure you can afford the surprises that come with relocating.

And, of course, you could be like Costanza and just "do the opposite".

I know a lot of people who have moved because they thought the city in which they lived would magically transport them to happiness.

Never works. If you're happy in Racine, you could be happy in Knoxville, Tucson, or Tulsa. If you're not, you won't be.

yeah, i'm 30 and have been doing that sort of thing since college. what DOA said is completely right, it ain't the life-altering experiece you think it might be. move for a woman or career opportunity or warmer weather, but not if you're in a rut or have a couple friends somewhere else.

although if you're thinking of a move to Chicago from Racine, i don't see what would be so tough. it would stink, granted, but for the first week or so until you find a place in Chicago, you can make the commute until then.

Save up money--i can't think of a single question that "save money" wouldn't be a good answer for.

I moved out when I was 22, I cashed in all my spare change to pay my security deposit

I love the Milwaukee area but have pondered just picking up and going somewhere, but isn't going to happen at this point

If you already have a friend in Cincy, I would say why the hell not, do it tomorrow

Get your finances in order. Whenever there is any sort of discord in our house, it almost always centers around financial issues. If you want to move out of your family's house, super -- only do so with some sort of gameplan -- Work 60 hour weeks, save up as much money as you can, and then you can look at finding new options -- You should be able to sock away a lot of money in 12 months or so.
