TV Timeout and CBB

I don't understand what a TV timeout is? I kinda know about it, but when is it used and how many are there? Someone please clue me in?

TV timeouts automatically occur every 4 minutes of game play. They're taken during the first stoppage of play below the 16 minute, 12, 8, and 4 minute mark left in each half.

yeah peavey summed it up perfectly. and the same applies to the nba but the TV timeouts occur at the first whistle under 9, 6, and 3 minutes of each quarter

And each team has how many timeouts per half? This is one of the big reasons why basketball just isn't watchable to me. Way too many timeouts, completely ruins the flow of the game.

 

TV timeouts are fine, as long as it's like hockey and each team gets one timeout per game.

each team gets 1 full and 4 20 second timeouts for the entire game, can use them all up in the 1st half and have none left in the second half if you really want

Ah, that's not too bad. It's far worse in the "professional" game when the teams use four full timeouts in the last 20 seconds of a game.

I think one of the 20's in both college and pros have to be taken in the 1st half.

Also, in the second half of a college game, there is a 5th "floater" timeout. This one is taken after the first called team timeout of the half. So...say a team starts off on a big run to begin a half and the other team calls a timeout with 17 minutes left in the half. That is the first called team timeout, and a TV break. Then the ball goes out of bounds with 15:59 left, that is the first stoppage after the 16 minute mark, another TV timeout. It can be weird.

What's really funny is when one team has to take a timeout with say 15:20 left, as they are on a bad run and feel the need to stop the clock and discuss things. So, they'll inbound it, the other team knocks it out of bounds...and they'll be another timeout called.

 

Once, the Badgers played a long time with no stoppages, and the first one wasn't taken until about the 11 minute mark, and the 2nd one at about 10:45.
