Shaq as big a spender as he is a man

"While the affidavit shows O'Neal makes a huge amount of money, $1.8 million in monthly salary, publicity contracts and returns on investments, his routine expenses total $875,015 - a month.

Among them: $156,116 in mortgages on three homes (including his $20 million mansion on Miami Beach's Star Island), plus $31,299 in homeowners insurance; $3,345 in phone bills; $1,610 in lawn and pool maintenance; $12,775 for food; $10,065 in electricity, $1,495 for cable TV; $5,000 in car payments (for three cars - he owns at least twice as many); $24,300 in gas; $6,730 in dry cleaning; $17,220 in clothing; $2,305 for pets and $110,505 for vacations."

Ok, maybe I'm missing something but how can someone spend $3,345 in phone bills and $24,300 in gas in one month? $24,300 in gas equates out to approximately 8,100 gallons. Even at only 10 miles to the gallon, that's 81,000 miles, divided by 2 for him and his wife, that's 40,500 miles traveled per month. How is that possible? I understand he probably has boats and other toys, but that's ridiculous!!

You would be surprised how much gas a boat eats up, and I don't think Shaq is puttering around Miami with an Evinrude 70 powering a little 18' fishing boat. My guess is that a 100' yacht and 40' cigarette speed boat are eating up most of that gas bill. And boat gas is almost twice as expensive as car gas.

$3,345 in phone bills

Yeah, that one gets me. An unlimited cell phone plan is, what, $200/month? $300/month tops? Any decent phone company you can get a home phone with unilmited long distance for $100/month. I'm guessing that everyone on both sides of the family has a cell phone that is linked to his account.

so factors that people and the media are missing are that these figures are the just the highest amounts he would spend. Its a divorce so he is going to put the highest numbers out there in order to prevent her from taking so much. For example, maybe in June he used up 23,000 in gas and but oblivously during the season he isnt going to use that much. Same with the vacations number. Basically he just took the highest amount he spent in a month on one of the catagories and used that figure.

Secondly in regards to food, i would imagine 6-7000 of that is the personal chef that he has.

The amount for clothes doesn't surprise me - he is so big that he has to get everything custom made. Custom made clothes cost a fortune; I know because I get custom made dress shirts and they start at $100/shirt (and that is for a basic shirt with a low-end fabric). I would say that for Shaq one custom made suit will run at least $5000, if not more. Custom-made dress shoes will probably run well over $1000. So for him, $17K/month in clothes is probably one suit, 4-5 shirts, 3-4 pairs of pants, 1-2 pairs of shoes, and some miscellaneous stuff (socks, shorts, underwear). Two suits will probably take him over the $17K mark.

But keep in mind that he is still netting $1M/month; if I were netting $1M/month I would definitely step up my purchasing.

my brother is the same height and has to get all his clothes custom-made, and it ain't cheap. also, Shaq ain't exactly getting his stuff from Men's Warehouse, he's probably having it shipped from Italy. and don't forget his wife wandering around the highest-end clothing shops in Miami all day.

and not just a personal chef, but a personal chef who has to fly to every single game with him, plus probably two more to cook for his family when he's away.

either way, though, dang. what happens when he retires and doesn't have that income anymore?

(i've heard rumour that Shaq is considering MMA when he retires)

How is "boat gas" twice as expensive as car gas? It's the same thing. It's sometimes more expensive on a lake because it's easier for boaters to gas up, but it's not different gas. I assume that's what you're talking about, correct?

I agree with the entire divorce thing...get those numbers as high as you can...it's your only hope of keeping some of your stuff. I think it's important to remember that these probably really aren't all Shaq's expenses. I know he's been one to give back to his family and to kids so these numbers could really not be his true costs. And if they are...who cares. Shaq makes the big money and he's STILL saving $1 million a month. That's more than you can say about a lot of other athletes.

Where does this monthly "salary" come from in this article? I'm guessing that's post tax because that does seem kind of low -- if his salary and endorsements are included.

1) Most big yachts and high-end speed boats don't run on car gas.

B) It's kind of physically impossible to pull a 100-ft. yacht out of the water and up to the local Chevron. Probably can't fit a 40-ft. speed boat there either. So yes, they have to fill up at the marina. And they charge a pretty premium there.

My roommate has a 40-ft. yacht, and he routinely puts $1000 in gas in that thing. And that's for a little 40-ft; I'm assuming Shaq has at least a 100-ft. yacht if not larger. Trust me dude, I know boats.

"And if they are...who cares."

That's what this whole thread is about. I really can't stand when people say "who cares" when there is already an on-going discussion. Speak for yourself.

Ok, I don't care. If those numbers are right (which I doubt it), he's saving $1 million a month. Shaq does all kinds of charity work and in general seems like a nice guy. I'm not going to worry about the big fella spending $17k a month on clothes.

Shaq probably does have a huge boat, but even a boat for water skiing burns through the stuff pretty fast. Some of those boats get less than a mile a gallon -- adds up really fast.
