Tax Rebate Check Coming?

The Fed and Congress need to come up with some kind of package to keep the coming recession (And I'm sure it's coming) rather shallow and short. If this can tangibly shorten the cycle of recession I'm all for it. This rebate ("Loan") combined with fed interest rate cuts and additional poor financing (Increase of food stamps, extension of unemployment benefits) hopefully should do the trick.

Thank you sub prime market for ruining our economy.

I'm confused as to why everyone keeps calling it a "loan". Anyone have a good explanation? The only thing that I can think of is that it would be considered taxable income, so I get that we're paying back "interest", but at what point do we pay back the "loan"?

If I had Braun's pee in my fridge I'd tell everybody.

It's likely because the government is giving out money that it doesn't have, and is pretty much doing it on 'credit.'

I don't think it's coming- it's already been here for a couple of months.

The GDP is still going up, so there is no current recession. Many do not feel there will be one at all, as it takes 2 quarters to have a recession, and most economists feel Q1 of '08 will show growth. The current condition, unless a recession occurs, is usually called a slowdown, or a slow growing phase. Of course, both major Dem candidates have been using the word "recession" freely since last summer, but saying it does not make it happen.http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif

EDIT: Changed GNP to GDP.

Let's not kid ourselves, it is election year BS by both parties. This is under the guise of stimulus, which is a joke. By the time people get their checks this summer we'll already be coming out of recession (if we're even in one.) So I'm not eligible for a rebate check becuase I make too much, yet someone who doesn't pay ANY income tax gets a rebate check? That's nothing more than redistribution of wealth no matter how you slice it. Socialism 101. It's ironic, because if I were eligible for the rebate, much of that check would have gone straight to charity.

By simply announcing it this week, they pushed the market up 400 points in two days (prior to today's sell off). I'd say that might have been more of their goal in terms of the very short term- stabilizing the market.

Between adjusting the interest rates, economic stimulus packages and helping out potential foreclosures - the government is always jumping in to try and stop a recession. The problem is that it is often at the expense of good future economic planning.

We keep mortgaging tomorrow for today.

At some point, you just have to accept that an economy can't go up forever. People spent too much money on artificially inflated homes. Etc. Sometimes you have to just live with a downturn and let the situation correct itself instead of always pumping the quick fix.

this is not a "rebate" or a "loan" folks. it is an "economic stimulus package"

lets get our phrases right here! http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif

either way, it is a nice little chunk of change to get right before we have child #2.

our money will help fund my annual field trip to Phoenix for a Diamondback game with 150 students and their low-income families.

I usually do this on my bank account; this year I can do it on Uncle Sam's.

I was flipping the channels and that Huckabee guy had a good line

He said something like to pay for this rebate, we'll borrow 150 billion from China so we can go to stores and spend it on products we import from China.

When exactly is this check supposed to arrive?
"Dustin Pedroia doesn't have the strength or bat speed to hit major-league pitching consistently, and he has no power......He probably has a future as a backup infielder if he can stop rolling over to third base and shortstop." Keith Law, 2006

I heard a great way to describe this whole "refund" thing. Say someone comes up to you, steals your wallet, and then is "nice" to you and gives you $20 back. Are you gonna thank the thief? NO WAY!! The only way all of this is going to change is if we ALL live within our means. That means not charging the $3000 big screen TV if you can't pay for it, if the civic leaders, local and state and federal can not waste the taxpayer money by throwing it out the window. Otherwise, we'll continually be in this mess as a nation.

June.

I actually just heard recently that it may be as early as this spring. I suppose technically that would include part of June, but it seemed like it would be more likely in April or May.
