RIP Allan Melvin (Sam the Butcher)

Amazingly, Allan Melvin only appeared in eight Brady Bunch episodes, but he passes away best known for that role.

 

Barney Hefner on "All in the Family", Staff Sergeant Charley Hacker on Gomer Pyle, and many more roles, including the voice of Magilla Gorilla

Sam the Butcher only appeared in eight episodes? I know you're not kidding me, but you've gotta be kidding me.

I can't believe he was only in eight. That's remarkable. Did they have another Sam? Did they just refer to "Sam" in episodes without showing him that much? Or were his performances really that memorable?

 

He had some terrific roles, and must have hit his stride right during my prime tv watching age.

I remember him more from Archie Bunker's Place.

 

For some reason, for many years I thought he was the Cowardly Lion in the Wizard of Oz movie.

Didn't know he was on the Brady Bunch, never watched it. I remember him as Cpl Henshaw on The Phil Silvers Show and from All In The Family. Didn't know he was Magilla either.

I didn't realize he did Magilla Gorilla. In contrast to the weepy Barney on All in the Family, he played bullies on Andy Griffith. I believe in one episode he was going to beat up Barney Fife; in another he was going to beat up Howard Sprague.
