BREWERS ACQUIRE FREE AGENT OUTFIELDER MIKE CAMERON

Three-Time Gold Glove Award Winner Signed To One-Year Deal

MILWAUKEE - The Milwaukee Brewers today signed outfielder

Mike Cameron to a one-year contract with a club option for 2009. The

announcement was made by Executive Vice President and General Manager

Doug Melvin.

"Mike brings many skill sets to the ballpark each day," said

Melvin. "I have always admired the way he plays the game. Mike has a

rare combination of defense, power and baserunning along with the

ability to work the count. He is also a leader in the clubhouse. It is

not a coincidence that he has been on a number of winning teams

throughout his career."

Cameron, 35, owns a career batting average of .251 with 216

home runs, 786 RBI and 272 stolen bases over 13 Major League seasons.

Since 1999, he has averaged 21 home runs and 25 stolen bases per season.

He is one of only four players to average more than 20 home runs and 20

stolen bases over the last nine seasons, joining All-Stars Bobby Abreu,

Carlos Beltran and Alfonso Soriano. Cameron has five "20/20" seasons

since 1999. Only Abreu (7) and Beltran (6) have recorded more during

this period.

The three-time Gold Glove Award winner (2001, '03, '06) and

2001 American League All-Star has been a major part of three playoff

teams during his career along with two teams that fought to a one-game

Wild Card playoff. His teams have averaged 91 wins over the last nine

seasons.

Clubhouses had always said he was a good guy, and IMO he seems really humble and able to talk about any of his problems. May be a quick read but seems like a stand up guy as his former teammates had said. Ad also played in pitcher friendly parks so we'll see.

There were three things I found interesting from the press conference. The first is that Cameron was very unconvincing in his attempt to explain why he failed the drug test for a second time. I think he was trying to say the failed drug test was due to some supplement that he took, but he could not determine what supplement would cause this, so he decided to just serve out the suspension. It was just a strange attempt at an explanation. He was obviously nervous talking about it and it just didn't look like he was telling the truth.

Unrelated to Cameron: DM said Villanueva has an edge towards winning a spot in the rotation but they really liked him in the relief role last year. Until now, I had thought he was a lock for the rotation. I also got the impression that DM would go into spring training as is. I don't think he is looking to unload one of the starters (read Vargas). So we may see in spring training a 8 man competition for the 5 spots. That's probably for the best, since it will be nice insurance in case someone gets injured. We can always trade away any excess starters before the season begins. If we get desperate, some of the guys could be optioned. Guys like Bush and Capuano actually have options left, so while it would be unusual (and possibly could cause a rift), they could be sent to AAA.

I don't know if it's archived anywhere but I just watched it again on DVR and it wasn't much. Both got one question LaPorta's was about playing RF now too and he just said it keeps you guessing and keeps the game fun and whatever it takes to help the team and Gamel's question was about all the young guys that have been called up and what that says about player development and he said he needs to keep working hard so someday he could join them.

While they were giving their answers they showed some clips of each. LaPorta in the Arizona Fall League I believe and Gamel in Hawaii Winter Ball.
