iPhones

And That
The cell phone contract I have is almost up and being a newly converted Mac guy, I feel it necessary to be interested in getting an iPhone. Does anyone here have one? Any pros/cons to it? I'm not going to be getting it for its music storage capability, more for its phone-y features and web browsing capability. Thanks in advance.

I have three friends that have one, but I don't have one, I do have the ipod touch which is very similar. From talking to my friends and playing with theirs, I like what I see. The internet is easy to use for most sites, I have browsed here and posted here from my own ipod touch before too.

One drawback they had was my two friends being able to access work emails because their companies use outlook, apparently its a hassle but possible to get it working correctly with outlook/exchange.

I know using the ipod touch is dangerous while driving, I can imagine the iphone would take some getting used to for using it in the car also.

Well the iPhone I believe just uses LDAP and POP for connections. So you'd just have to have your administrator open up LDAP or POP on your system. If Apple made an outlook client ala Blackberry they might be able to get a pretty good market share. It's just the hip thing to have.

I've got one and I love it. I actually hadn't planned on getting one, it was a suprise gift from my wife as she new my Sprint contract was expiring. It's extraordinarily easy to set up and use. It syncs just fine with outlook. It works fine with my multiple email accounts. I don't use it at all for the music storage as I've already got an iPod. Sttops17 is right, it does take some time to get used to in the car, but, making calls while I drive is something I try and avoid anyway.

The iPhone is awesome. My wife has one and I have a plain old Motorola. I find myself 'borrowing' her phone as often as possible.

And as of today, the Mac platform will be the home theater platform of technophiles...

iPhone, with its software upgrades, just keeps getting better and better.

One minor con: it is somewhat hard to type on it in vertical keyboard mode. Horizontal keyboard mode is fine, however.

Disclaimer: Apple guy from way back when, so feel free to discount my comments as fanboyish.

I've had one for a while now, and have been quite pleased. The screen is great, typing is better than I expected...nice bit of hardware and software really. I just installed the new software...after a moment of panic as the upgrade choked and bricked the phone, I got it installed properly. In particular, the new Google Maps functionality is very nice...it can find your current location without a GPS chip...it does well, too, from my quick test, at least in my little megalopolis...even has a button to check traffic on the freeways, which also comes in handy around here. My employer uses an exchange mail server and I've had no trouble with email, but ymmv of course.

I live almost my entire life in reach of WiFi, so the speed of the EDGE network is rarely an issue. It does prevent me from surfing the web while on the freeway, but that is certainly a good thing. If you live away from WiFi (shudder) and speed is important, or if the smallish capacity bothers you, you may wish to wait on the rumored upgrades that will come this year.
