New Power 50 and 2007 roster projections, 12/3, and BIG news

And That

When the Power 50 comes out this Sunday (I promise), there will be some BIG news regarding the P50. Stay tuned to Brewerfan on Sunday afternoon for an announcement.

Furthermore, my first projection of 2007 major/minor league rosters will come out on Sunday. I just hope Counsell or Graffy and Cirillo get signed before then so I can pencil them in the "TBD" slots.

I apologize for the delay in posting the new Power 50. Free time is not something I have had recently, but that issue will be resolved shortly.

Enjoy this Sunday. Until then, feel free to post your top 20 Brewer prospects. I already have my list done, but I want to see what ya'll think.

Have a good one.

Toby, it's all good my man! It doesn't make sense to do a Power 50 until at least this weekend anyway, and then after the winter meetings I suppose if possible.

I'm really looking forward to your depth charts as I mentioned elsewhere. You are pretty much my eyes and ears in the minors and I appreciate your efforts.

If the Power 50 goes to a vote, will it be weighed in like the polls in the BCS?! Yipe! I hope it does not because I don't think there are too many qualified eyes gauging the talent in the minor leagues.

A suggestion for the P50...if Toby is taking suggestions. Make it sort of like a College Coaches poll, or MVP ballot where a certain number of BF.net regular posters get votes (say 25 posters) and every month or two they must submit thier top 50 prospects. Someone (it doesnt HAVE to be Toby if he is busy) compiles those numbers and makes out a BF.net user P50.

Of course, I always have liked what Toby has done as well and think he has done a masterful job with the P50 so if it stays the way it is I think that is totally cool as well.

Top 20

1. Ryan Braun, 3B -- Should be the Opening Day 3B for the Brewers after his AFL stint.

2. Yo Gallardo, RHP -- Ceiling puts him very very high.

2*. Will Inman, RHP -- Very high ceiling. He could be as good as Gallardo, but there are other starting pitching prospects closer to the majors than he is. He will make the majors, but it is an open question which team he will make it with.

3. Tim Dillard, RHP -- The worst you can say is that he is an inning-eater with a 1.16 WHIP over his career. Averaged six innings a game over the past two years on strict pitch counts, with four relief appearances. Perhaps the most underrated starting pitcher in the Brewers system and the biggest sleeper.

4. Carlos Villanueva, RHP -- Has the inside track to be the #5 starter. The steal of the Wayne Franklin trade.

5. Zach Jackson, LHP -- Moved through the minors quickly. Probably needs a year or two in AAA.

6. Angel Salome, C -- Injured to end 2006. Hopefully not a sign of things to come. No need to rush him.

7. Cole Gillespie, OF -- Hopefully he will continue to hit.

8. Mark Rogers, RHP -- Good news: He has the velocity of Derrick Turnbow. Bad news: He seems to have the control of Derrick Turnbow.

9. Charlie Fermaint, CF -- He's got talent, but 2006 was the first time he got over 400 PA in a season. Can he stay on the field?

10. Jeremy Jeffress, RHP -- See Mark Rogers.

11. Lorenzo Cain, OF -- Seems to be generating a lot of hits, andhas a lot of speed. But will power also develop?

12. Dennis Sarfate, RHP -- Another hard-thrower who could help in the bullpen.

13. Hernan Irribarren, 2B -- Gets a lot of hits, and has some speed, but power is non-existant. Strikes me as a perfect #2 or #8 hitter.

14. Steve Hammond, LHP -- Stats look a lot like Tim Dillard's. Not as many IP, but the WHIP was 1.13 for 2006.

15. Manny Parra, LHP -- Rebounding nicely from shoulder problems, but are they gone for good?

16. Mat Gamel, 3B -- Drafted in the same draft as Ryan Braun. On a slower career track. Showing power, and the ability to take walks.

17. Vinny Rottino, C/3B/1B/OF -- Could be a poor man's Craig Wilson. Slumped a little in the AFL, but could be very valuable bench asset in 2008.

18. Chris Errecart, OF/1B -- Right-handed bat with power.

19. Drew Anderson, LF/RF -- Another left-handed bat, but more like a left-handed Brady Clark in terms of some speed, good on-base skills, and the abilty to deliver 30-35 doubles and 10 homers a season. A prototypical #2 hitter.

20. Brendan Katin, LF/RF -- Slugged nearly .470 in a pair of minor-league baseball's more pitcher-friendly ballparks. Teammate of Ryan Braun at University of Miami - could they be teammates in Milwaukee as well?

Honorable mentions: C Lou Palmisano, OFs Michael Brantley, Ryan Crew, and Tony Gwynn Jr., RHPs Robert Hinton, Mike Jones, and Rolando Pascual, LHP Steve Garrison, 1B/C Ned Yost Jr., and SS Alicides Escobar

My list was based on who was likely to either force their way to the bigs with Milwaukee, or who could help out the Brewers soon.

Will Inman is great, but he had some minor injury problems this past year, and I think he will be blocked in the rotation by a combination of Gallardo, Zach Jackson, Hammond, Villanueva and Dillard. All are closer to the majors, and they could be the rotation in 2009 (if both Sheets and Capuano are gone).

He will make the majors, but not with Milwaukee. He's probably the guy who the Brewers send in a deal at the deadline to make a run for the playoffs in 2007-2009.

I also don't know enough about Perez to really decide if he is a prospect or not.

I'm shocked actually clancy. Not that the fact that you left Inman out but due to the fact that Dillard is not number 1. In all seriousness though, the top 3 are a given and it should be who number 4-20 in our system in my opinion.

If he's not dealt, he's probably #4 behind Dillard, and the #20 guy gets dropped (that's Katin).

But I'm looking at Gallardo, Jackson, Dillard, Hammond, Villanueva, and Parra. All are going to be fighting for rotation slots at AA or AAA. That does not include a few people by the name of Sheets, Capuano, Bush, and Vargas.

I could easily see the Brewers moving Inman in a deadline deal in 2007 or 2008 if they are in the thick of the playoff hunt.

the only pitcher better than Inman is Yo, and that could be debateable after next year...

I've seen both, and inman dominates as much as yo does...

I like those other guys, but how can you discount a guy who has mid 90's heat and impeccable control?

its your call...but inman has to be the 3rd best prospect in the system...

Clancy, regardless of how Inman stacks up on the Brewers depth chart in your mind, your top 20 really lacks any credibility if you're going to omit Inman.

And if his injury problems troubled you as well, why do you have Salome so high after he finished the season with a broken ankle? That doesn't exactly bode well for his future being a catcher.

I didn't see this story posted anywhere, but given the conversation I figured I would add it here, but Inman was named MiLB's A-ball pitcher of the year:

Oh yeah, and Errecart bats right-handed. He throws left-handed.

Perhaps, and I admit he is great. But will he make the majors with Milwaukee, or will he be dealt in 2007-2008 as part of a deadline deal for a playoff run or for help elsewhere?

The Brewers have four starters in thier major-league rotation: Sheets, Capuano, Bush, and Vargas.

They have six guys who will be at AAA or in the majors in 2007: Villanueva, Gallardo, Parra, Dillard, Hammond, and Jackson.

That does not include additional pickups via trade or a free-agent signing. For all we know, a Jenkins-for-Pavano deal could happen. Or the Brewers get a couple of college starters in the 2007 draft with their comp picks frm Graffanino.

This has absolutely nothing to do with evaluating prospects. It has to do with talent and weighing that talent in relationship to their age in relationship the level in which they are playing. Inman is very young and dominated A-ball. The only pitching prospect better in the system is Gallardo. It's one thing to have Inman a few spots lower than most, but again, to completely omit him from the top 5-10 prospects (much less the top 20) causes me to look past your entire list.

I understand that there are lots of decent arms in the high minors clancy...but inman's got special talent...

If he stays healthy for the next two years, he'll jump over all those guys with the exception of sheets and yo...

i would rather the brewers just released manny parra than make inman wait in line behind him...

They have six guys who will be at AAA or in the majors in 2007: Villanueva, Gallardo, Parra, Dillard, Hammond, and Jackson.

Except for Yo, those guys all project to be middle-to-bottom of the rotation starters at best. Dillard and Hammond are usually thought of as future relievers. Parra's injuries probably give him the same fate. To think any of them would block Inman if Inman continues his climb is inexcusably ridiculous, not to mention fergalicious. Inman has the highest ceiling of the bunch, again not including Yo.

My shot at the top 20

1. Ryan Braun- When the GM says you're next "if" Koskie goes down, you're up.

2. Yo Gallardo- I think Braun will hit Milwaukee first, that's the only thing that separated them.

3. Will Inman- Dominant results, any GM would want him.

4. Carlos Villanueva- Looking like a great trade with the Giants.

5. Zach Jackson- I like his mix of pitches, I do think he's been rushed up the ladder a bit, I'd like to see a full season in AAA.

6. Angel Salome- He's still a long ways from Milwaukee, but it's nice to have a real prospect at catcher.

7. Mark Rogers- This wasn't who I wanted when he was drafted, I'm still a skeptic, this ranking is purely on potential.

8. Charlie Fermaint- Great skills, I think Charlie will take a big step forward in '07.

9. Jeremy Jeffress- This pick also makes me nervous, but the potential is obvious.

10. Cole Gillespie- Could beat Rogers and Jeffress to Milwaukee.

11. Manny Parra- Look away when he's pitching, keep fingers crossed.

12. Brent Brewer- This one was the toughest one for me, he's all tools and who knows what? I could see him taking a big step in either direction.

13. Tony Gwynn Jr- I think 07 is pivotal for Jr, he surprised me at AAA, can he take one more step up, or is he a career bench player?

14. Dennis Sarfate- Stay in the strike zone Dennis, I think you could do very well from the pen in Milwaukee.

15. Tim Dillard- All results so far, I feel bad about having him this low, this player will cause much debate on this site when he reaches the Brewers.

16. Alcides Escobar- Where's the guy who had everyone so excited? .306 slugging percentage? A slow start will cause a freefall on anyone's list next season.

17. Hernan Iribarren- The offensive potential is surely there, but there's a pile of caught stealings, and a corked bat.

18. Lorenzo Cain- This was a 17th round pick, now 18th on my list.

19. Yohannis Perez- I've never seen him play, but why not?

20. Mat Gamel- Maybe someday Braun will move to the OF, and maybe this is why.

If Carlos V has to come out, put Pascual at 20 for me.

If Parra is anywhere near 100% hes by far a better prospect then Inman IMO, As i feel Parra could develope into a Liriano type pitcher down the road but he needs to stay healthy. Inman strikes me as a solid young man who knows how to control his pitches like Maddux but with a bit more power on his fastball... It just to hard to figure out whos gonna flame out and whos gonna take the next step.. Could Parra be like Carpenter and be the next big pitcher to come back from injuried plagued years???

IMO my list of top 10 Pitchers are

1 Yovani Gallardo

2 Will Inman

3 Manny Parra

4 Carlos Villianueva

5 Zack Jackson

6 Tim Dillard

7 Mark Rogers

8 Mike Jones

9 Steve Hammond

10 Jeremy Jeffress

Inman just keeps winning

Man, I really like Will Inman's attitude, style and ambition...

Quote:
"It's frustrating when I lose," he said. "I'm a hard critic of myself. I always feel like I could have done better. No matter what I do, I'm always trying to win. Losing is just the end of the world to me."

Quote:
"I think the biggest thing for me to be effective was the fact I don't walk a lot of guys," Inman said. "I throw a lot of strikes. I go right after guys. I hate walking guys. I'd almost rather give up a homer than walk them and let them get on base for free.

Quote:
"When I signed a Major League Baseball contract out of high school, my whole goal was to get to the Major Leagues as fast as possible and be there as long as possible," he said. "I don't want to be that guy that gets there and is average and just plays pro ball. I want to be the guy that goes out there and dominates for years and years and years and ends up in the Hall of Fame. I want to make a statement when I get there."

I love it. This guy is a quote machine. I love his confidence and attitude.
