Favorite places to go camping

NeedMoreFans
I am trying to see what opinions people have about campgrounds here in Wisconsin. I used to go camping a lot, but haven't gone in a few years, and want to go again this year. I normally camp at the state parks, but most of the parks I've camped at have been in the Eastern part of the state. Are there any really cool state parks or national/state forestes in the Western or Northern parts of the state? I'm looking for a park that is on or near water and has stuff to do, like canoe or hike or something. Where do people like to go?

Lost Lake Campground in Nicolet National Forest. It's way up in Florence County.

I went camping there a few years ago. Really peaceful and quiet. Some pretty good hiking trails and when I was there there were a few bald eagles that lived by the lake. Also the beach is really small but there really aren't many people around so it shouldn't be a huge problem.

Lake Wissota just next to Chippewa Falls. It's a beautiful lake and there isn't much boating traffic.

Devil's Lake is a much busier state park, but they have some great hiking trails.

Mirror Lake state park is a nice wooded area set just outside of Wisconsin Dells. They're located on a lake (more like a river) that has almost zero boat traffic.

I've heard the one outside of LaCrosse that overlooks the Mississippi River is a beautiful state park (I don't know the name).

Iron Mountain MI, Carney Lake. Your in the middle of state forests, my family owns land there so I am not sure but I do not think the campgrounds have electric. I think it costs 10 bucks or less a day. Big campsites with firepits and normally not at all crowded. If you have a Jeep or ATV you will have a blast on the trails going off roading. There are a few bluffs to climb and your right on the lake with decent but not great fishing. In the area there are some lakes that have great fishing however. Its a 4 hour drive and to me its one of the best places on earth.

It is not at all uncommon for there to be no other campers there.

Peninsula State Park in Door County. . .Devil's Lake State Park near Baraboo. . .I think the one on the Mississippi River that colbyjack referred to is Wyalusing.

One of my favorite activities many years ago was picking up a Woodall's camping guide and picking random places to visit.

I spent a week at Copper Falls State Park near Ashland last summer. There's a beautiful river running through the park as well as a smallish lake which I believe they don't allow motor boats on. It served us well as a campground and as a base for exploring the northwest part of the state.

Edit: I'd avoid camping at the other two state parks in the area, Big Bay and Amnicon Falls. Both are neat to visit for a few hours, but not as nice as Copper Falls.

I'd like to visit Copper Falls some day. My grandparents took a trip there early in their marriage (possibly as part of their low-budget, Depression-era honeymoon), which I learned when perusing some photo albums after their deaths. It would be great fun, I think, to try to locate the sites where they took photos and take some "now" photos at the same (or at least similar) spots.

Sorry to sidetrack a bit. Man, am I a local history geek.

Last time we went camping, we went to Peninsula. It was nice, but it can get crowded. Devil's Lake is too close to home (we live in Madison), and is a short drive for us to go up there for a day. I was thinking of something up north near Lake Superior or along the Mississippi/St. Croix. I'd also go up to the national forests.
