Vegas: Luxor or MGM

cweber39

A group of us are planning a trip to Vegas this fall, we are choosing between the Luxor or MGM. I have never stayed at either, but I have walked through and gambled in both. I have stayed at the Tropicana and Paris before, but wanted to try a different place. Any thoughts between the Luxor or MGM, experiences good or bad?? Thanks!

Between the two (and I've stayed at both) I prefer the MGM. Seems a little classier I suppose and the new tram stops there. Luxor is OK and its an easy walk to Mandalay Bay which is a cool hotel. Really, they aren't all that different. I'd pick the place with the best room rate.

I've stayed at the MGM and been impressed - the basic rooms are pretty nice. With the Luxor, I'd ensure that you know precisely where you are staying - either in the pyramid or in the separate tower - before making your decision.

There are always better shows and stuff like that the MGM. Plus, their players card is good for about 6 other casinos (NY NY, Mirage, Treasure Island, etc.). So, you could get offers to stay at any of those the next time you get out there.

MGM and Luxor are part of the same Casino group: The MGM-Mirage group. Their card is good at:

Bellagio Hotel/Casino

Circus Circus

Slots-A-Fun Casino

Excalibur

Luxor

Mandalay Bay

MGM Grand Las Vegas

The Mirage

Monte Carlo Hotel/Casino

New York-New York Hotel/Casino

Treasure Island

My husband and I have stayed at Luxor several times and enjoyed ourselves each time. (We've never stayed at MGM.) MGM is a little "newer" because they've undergone some major renovations in the last decade. (We usually choose to stay at Luxor because Ancient Egypt is one of my favorite things.) I think you'd be fine at either one; checking for the cheaper rates may be the way to make your decision. (And MGM isn't that much closer to the center of the strip; besides, walking the strip is a great experience.)

I'll concur with what my wife says.

Plus, I love the walk over to Mandalay Bay for their eats and drinks.

But above all else, go where the tables are hot.

MGM is really in a different league then the Luxor. Been to both and the Luxor is not 'bad' and runs quite a bit cheaper overall. MGM would be the way I'd go, but you could do worse then Luxor. I sort of like the south side of the strip and the Luxor does place you there.

Only downside of MGM is that it is a big place and you can have some LONG walks to get around. Plus staying at MGM might help you get into Studio 54 (if that's your thing but it's pretty hoppin' all night long). If you like Mandalay Bay (like I do), from the MGM just walk across the street to Excalibur and hop the Mandalay Bay express train.

MGM does have the best breakfast bargain around - the McDonalds in the Studio Walk in the back of the hotel has $1 egg McMuffins if you don't want to spend $20 on the breakfast buffet. Of course, it also means getting there by 10:30AM, but the rest of the menu at McDonalds is reasonably priced.

I would say it so much depends on the room. I stayed in a corner room of the pyramid and it was fantastic. I am told any of the "edges" in the pyramid has a lot of casino noise, even at the high levels. I have seen a few MGM rooms, they were very nice also.

I give the edge to the Luxor, because pyramids are cooler than big green buildings.

However, the MGM gets points because they pay a guy to imprint the MGM logo into all the sand in the ashtrays in the casino. Look for it.
