Is HD-DVD done?

Schlitz001

I don't know what sort of porn you're watching, but there are some Digital Playground movies that have pushed the level of enjoyable viewing for myself. I'll leave it at that, so as not to get this locked.

MSC: Edit so it doesn't sound as dirty.

I don't know what sort of porn you're watching, but there are some DP movies that have pushed the level of enjoyable viewing for myself.

I looked at DP's wikipedia entry and it seems that they had one release that was released on Blu-Ray that was rated R.

The bottom line is that Sony is not allowing Porn movies to be made on Blu-Ray.

"In a last-minute change of porn allegiance, top adult studio Digital Playground has defected from Blu-ray to HD DVD for its upcoming next-gen releases -- and it seems that's just fine with Sony.

One-named auteur Joone, the founder of Digital Playground, recently told German magazine Heise Online that "Sony wants me to publish my films on HD DVD."

That's a switch from a year ago, when Digital Playground was planning to be the first adult studio to jump into the next-gen waters, and to support Blu-ray exclusively. Though we're sure "legit" studios like Sony can't be publicly associated with porn, we all know that, historically at least, adult content has driven the success of every major home video format. So we would have thought Sony would have welcomed the news, at least behind closed doors."

quick question: I was in Kmart today and saw a whole rack of Blu-ray movies. The boxes are really small! Are the discs small, too? Like a DVD disc for a camcorder? Smaller? larger? I don't think they are the normal size of a DVD or a CD, are they? Just wondering out loud here.

The Blu-Ray discs are the same physical size as regular DVD's. The regular DVD's play in my Blu Ray player which then becomes an upconvert DVD player for them. Upconverted does not equal HD but the picture still looks a little better than regular progressive scan.

This article is from engadget today and discusses how Digital Playground is format neutral after demand from Playstation 3 owners. They have a line of movies already to be released onto Blu-Ray.

And here is a blurb with a statement from a Sony executive denying a Blu-Ray porn ban.

At this point in the game, Sony needs to accept that they have won the format war with or without the help of the porn industry and the industry isn't going to continue to turn out movie in a dead format like HD-DVD. Sony may not like what is going on, but they are better off quietly accepting it.

WSJ 2/18: "Given Blu-ray's recent momentum, analysts had speculated that Toshiba would quietly phase out the HD DVD business over the next few years, just as Sony did with its Betamax format, in an effort to save its corporate pride. That its executives are considering a complete withdrawal shows how grim the situation has become... Toshiba will likely continue to provide customer support for HD DVD players that it has sold, but it had no compensation plans in mind for consumers who have already purchased them."
