What's in your CD player?

I too have always enjoyed Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings. My one gripe with them is something that isn't their fault - I just get sort of bored by the monotony of the genre. On "100 Days, 100 Nights" I loved the first few tracks, liked the next handful and my mind is always somewhere else by the end even though it's only like 35 minutes long.

I could say the same thing about modern rock/pop.

I am one of the few people on earth to make the following statement... the above album, Spiritualized: "Pure Phase" is one of the ten best albums ever made. Perfect in its myopic pursuit of drug-induced bliss, Jason Pierce crafted his masterpiece with this record. It's starts out as a rock album, but carefully devolves into a bliss-out worthy of even the best trip. This album is as utterly enjoyable under the influence of nothing than not. It will rock your face off and catapult it into space.

I had this album right after I saw the video for "Underground" on 120 minutes, this band has not guitats?! wild! lets buy this. No one even heard of them till "Brick" came out, then I think Ben Folds had mild success as a solo artist? Either way, track highlights are "Underground" "Video" and "Jackson Cannery"

I've been listening to a song from this. Looks like I'll have to spend some money on the Japanese import if I want the whole disc. Takes me back to my youth.

Released in the same year as "The Joshua Tree" and containing a few tracks with U2 ostensibly as a backing group, Robbie Robertson's eponymous solo debut is an under-heard record. Also contains contributions from Peter Gabriel, the BoDeans, a Neville brother or two, at-the-time surviving The Band member Garth Hudson, Rick Danko and Levon Helm, drummer extraordinaire Manu Katche, a pretty and loving tribute song to Richard Manual, and all this wrapped up by producer Daniel Lanois.

Ghostland Observatory: "Paparazzi Lighting"

As far as the Dead goes, I've been a bit obsessed with Europe '72, Aoxomoxoa and Anthem of the Sun recently. Particularly the bonus tracks on the remastered Europe '72, where the veer between Good Lovin', Caution (Do Not Stop on Tracks) and other things amongst a late Pigpen's awesome ramblings.

Did anyone like the Vampire Weekend album? Because I thought it was awful. Right now, I've been trying to listen to as much new music as possible, and not much has really caught my attention. I recommend the Honeydrips album "Here Comes the Future," otherwise January was a pretty weak month of music.

I like the Vampire Weekend, actually. I've only listened to it three times, though. I actually thought January was fantastic, I heard a lot of stuff I loved (not all released in January, but soon):

The Mountain Goats - "Heretic Pride"

Drive-By Truckers - "Brighter Than Creation's Dark"

Jason Collett - "Here's To Being Here"

Lightspeed Champion - "Falling Off the Lavender Bridge" (this is seriously great)

Destroyer - "Trouble in Dreams"

Hercules & Love Affar - S/T

Xiu Xiu - "Women as Lovers"

I wasn't huge on that Honeydrips album. Magnetic Fields were a big letdown to me. Times New Viking's was lame.

EDIT: Forgot to also say that I dig the new Hot Chip.

Daft Punk, Alive

I've thought about it a lot, and I've decided that, no matter how much time I will need to give up, I am going to create a Daft Punk costume for Halloween. If I can make a helmet that looks even 1/50 as cool as theirs do, I will feel satisfied.

The Early Years: "The Early Years"

I don't remember who it was on here that suggested this album about 6 months ago, but God bless you sir. As good an old-school shoegaze album as has been made this decade. Even if you're willing to gloss over that this is more of a compilation than an album. Loverly.

Thao With the Get Down Stay Down - "We Brave Bee Stings and All"

Excellent. Indie-pop sort of similar to The Bird and the Bee, Feist, and things of that nature.

Sia: "Some People Have Real Problems"

Sia has a lovely voice, and producer Jimmy Hogarth does a good job of staying out of the way. "Day Too Soon" and "The Girl You Lost to Cocaine" both have shots at being amongst the best tracks of the year.

Try to be best

And a man's gotta learn to take it

Try to believe

Though the going gets rough

That you gotta hang tough to make it

Panda Bear: "Person Pitch"

A life changing album. I'll be happy to tell my kids about listening to it for the first time. It totally changed my view of music.

Unbelievable album. Made my top ten albums from last year, that's for sure.
