The Early Years: "The Early Years"

I don't remember who it was on here that suggested this album about 6 months ago, but God bless you sir. As good an old-school shoegaze album as has been made this decade. Even if you're willing to gloss over that this is more of a compilation than an album. Loverly.

Guilty as charged. A UK buddy of mine suggested that I might like them as I'm a big Secret Machines fan, and they were probably my top "oh crap, it's finished, better put it back on again" album of 2007.

Here's what is doing heavy rotation on the player at the moment.

Man, that's some big graphic right there!

The Black Angels: "Passover"

I went to a Black Angels show last year here in Minneapolis... while I won't say it was the best concert I've ever been to, it was easily the most intense. Small venue (7th Street Entry, woo), lots of people, lots of drinks, and the band kept the stage and house lights almost all the way off the entire time. It was just mind-blowing, loud, sweaty, awesomeness.

Can: "Delay 1968" (nee "Prepared To Meet Thy PNOOM")

This is at least partially what Can meant to have for their first release. What it is, is a compilation of songs from before their first official release, "Monster Movie". Everything here was recorded before that, and all the tracks feature original vocalist Malcom Mooney. This is my second or third favorite Can album... "Nineteen Century Man" and "Little Star of Bethlehem" dominate me.

I'm on a Will Hoge crash course the last few days. I'm seeing him open for Jason Isbell tomorrow night at the High Nooon Saloon, and I wasn't too familiar with him. He's quite good, nothing special as a songwriter really, but this live album shows that the guy is a pretty electric performer.

Strong recommendation here. This album isn't coming out for 2 months, but Foals "Antidotes" is definitely the best of its kind in the last couple years. If you look hard, you can find it. They're basically a more mathy Bloc Party, and it's definitely more musically sound than even "Silent Alarm," which is a great album. I strongly recommend listening to this right now.

I'm guessing that, like me, someone got "Worryingly Bad Album Covers" from Santa!

Erin McKeown: "We Will Become Like Birds"

Mostly light and airy guitar pop featuring McKeown's strong and innocent vocals. She's sort of a more laid-back roots-rocking Feist.

I have a couple of other McKeown CDs, but I don't have that one (at least not for a couple more minutes).

PS, you won't be disappointed. I'm sort of the opposite - that's the first McKeown album I owned, and I just got three of her other ones.

Anyway,

Medicine: "Shot Forth Self Living"

It's early '90s. It's shoegaze. It's louder than normal shoegaze. Mostly it is Brad Laner and one of my top 40 albums of all time.

This isn't the album I'm listening to right now... the Astrud Gilberto album I'm listening to is "The Girl from Ipanema". I can't post that album cover cos it's a little racy.

Basically, it's 2 a.m. and I can't fall asleep. Astrud Gilberto is what happens when that happens.

Dave Matthews Band, Live at Piedmont Park (Atl., GA)

So, the last track on Disc 1 is the Allman Brothers' Melissa. I thought to myself, 'wonder who they got to play guitar on that one?' Before you could say "Tim Reynolds," I see in the liner notes it is - of course - Gregg Allman. I mean, if you're gonna play Melissa, and you need a guy for lead guitar, just get Gregg Allman. That's what I'd do.

I will not skip ahead to listen to this track; I like to go through a live recording from start to finish. If I remember later, I'll mention if the DMB version was anything good.
