That last one's a tricky statement though, since B.o.B. was based on the true story. So unless your qualification is that since B.o.B. is based on the book... I can't fully get on board with the distinction you're trying to draw. If your claim is that the story of The Wire hasn't been told... and that B.o.B. has, others have pointed out that (obviously) there have been many crime/cop dramas.

The Wire isn't just a cop drama, though. I mean, it's got everything. The lines are so blurred between good/evil, it's just awesome. It's so realistic. The characters are so well rounded and developed, too. I personally think Stringer Bell may be the greatest character ever. Dude was just so cool. I shed a tear when he met his end. Season five is just going to be phenomenal.

Al, as I was reading the posts about The Wire I was going to comment that for people just starting out watching the show, be patient as Season 1 does take a few episodes to get going. New viewers who go into it with high expectations based on others' opinions of the show should especially keep this in mind. It would be a shame for people to be disappointed after a couple of episodes and give up on it. If you stick with it, you will be rewarded.

And brettac1, you may want to consider editing your most recent post. It contains a major spoiler and I know I would have been very disappointed had I found that out while I was making my way through the earlier seasons on DVD.

I don't think it's really a major spoiler. Each of the seasons can stand on their own, plus, I didn't say anything about what becomes of him. There's no specifics. Besides, all you would have to do is look at the cast on the back of the season 4 box and not see Idris Elba.

Wire, although I certainly haven't seen everything out there. And I think you have to judge miniseries in a separate category (which BoB clearly wins).

Yeah, I really liked Stringer. Heck, Avon was a great character as well, and Omar's awesome too.

I believe Episode 1 is available to HBO On Demand starting today.

Al, perhaps you didn't mean it this way, but it sure came out as "I just couldn't tell any of those black people apart". Maybe it's hard to keep all of the lower level characters straight at first, but I'm not sure how you would have a problem with keeping the big ones clear.

I haven't checked, but supposedly the Season 5 premiere of The Wire is up on HBO On Demand.

As far as HBO series go:

Drama

1. The Wire

2. The Sopranos

Comedy

1. Curb Your Enthusiasm

2. Flight of the Conchords (Season 2 of Entourage was the only really superior season)

Mini-Series

1. Band of Brothers

2. From Earth to the Moon
