Jury Duty

When I was up for jury duty in AZ, the jury pool was like 85 people....and I was number 80. I sat there as people were called up and dismissed and eventually they got a jury after 70 people had been questioned. So I basically sat there all day listening to the whole thing and then went home. It was kind of interesting in a way. It was a sexual assault that had happened 7 years earlier and some guy squealed on the defendent from prison. So the lawyers asked all these questions like "would you take a man's testimony less seriously if he was in jail" etc. etc. The strange thing was people's willingness to discuss very personal issues in front of total strangers even though you could tell the judge things in his chambers. Given it was a sex crime, one of the questions was "Have you or anyone you know well been the victim of a sexual crime?" One woman said in front of everyone that she'd been assaulted like two weeks earlier! I couldn't believe it. I guess that was her form of therapy. She was dismissed from the jury pool.

On the sexual assault case from which I was dismissed, jury selection took much longer than on the other cases. Because of the personal nature of the questions, everyone was pulled out and asked part of the question list privately.

That’s the only thing Chicago’s good for: to tell people where Wisconsin is.

I report at 8:00 am on the 18th of Feb. (I'm possibly there as you read this).

This is my second time doing it. Last time, was a pretty weak case that actually got the charges dropped.

I'm not going to be whistling dixie about being there, but it is a duty we all have to pull and I won't complain about it unless I get some 92 day long case and have to sleep in a hotel cell for that time.

I'm taking some reading material I've been unable to get to so at least I get caught up on some stuff.

I'm hoping I get picked quickly so I don't have to just sit around for two days.

-I used to have a neat-o signature, but it got erased.
