Ryan Braun Profile @ Project Prospect

i think he'll stick...while people talk about his defensive shortcomings constantly, i largely think its is because they cant think of any other negative things to say about him...

its also pretty clear that the brewers want him at 3b, considering they just moved their best position player to the outfield for him...

thanks Adam. Interesting reviews. it makes it fun to look ahead to the second half of 2007, when either Koskie will be platooning, traded, or injured. He lacks the OBP skills of Koskie, but could outhomer him.

also, some good points brad. I think that we all have forgotten that he was considered to have decent potential at SS. Sometimes 3b can be hard to learn, especially on poor minor league infields.

In addition to his defense not being that great right now, his pants are too tight and you can still strike him out with a fastball under the hands. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif

That article was delectable...my favorite part was this - hope it is accurate:

Braun might be more suited for the outfield because of this and his troubles with footwork, but there?s still a good chance that he?ll stick at third base. In either case, he certainly has the potential to be an above-average defender.

To me a guy that is athletic enough to play shortstop should be more than athletic enough to play third - he just needs reps. The problem the Brewers face is whether or not they need Braun at 3B in the short term or long term. That is, if they feel their window is just a few years to win a lot, maybe Braun would be better serverd playing LF but if they think their window is longer than that than keep him at 3B.

The thing that gives me hope about Brauns defense is that a huge majority of his errors are throwing errors. He has no problems fielding the ball, he has soft hands. Its pretty common for SS turned 3B to struggle with throwing, because they have to position themselves different for throws from 3B. While many do adjust to it in time, a few don't.

I've often wondered if Brauns best position would be 2B? He has the hands for it, and it would likely reduce the throwing errors. He's big for a 2B, but no bigger than Chase Utley. He's every bit as athletic as Utley.

I keep thinking of Jose hernandez. His fluid sidearm motion was solid at SS, but terrible at 3b.

We could also look back at a former athletic Brewer farmhand who came up as a shortstop and actually played 94 games there at the Major League level but quickly moved to 3B. He hung around there for 3-4 years before a permanent move to the OF, where his bat proved worthy as well.

He was taken 1 pick after Braun (6th overall) 19 years prior. Name withheld for good reason.

3-4 infield years out of Braun would be acceptable if not unexpected, and I believe his bat could also hold up in the OF.

We can just refer to him as 'he-who-must-not-be-named'.

I don't mean to be a jerk but that was the worst "scouting" report I've ever read.

It sounded like a compilation of stats, snippets from articles, and fluff thrown together.

I guarantee you the author has never seen Braun play in person...and if he has he has no more business evaluating prospects than any of you on this board.

I've heard/ read about the project prospect guys...they were soliciting on another board that I read. Not true professionals but merely hobbyists trying to make a name for themselves.

Not exactly expert analysis.

Yeah, we're still learning and working our way up. I'll be interning with Baseball America this spring and a few of our writers will be covering college baseball, so we should continue to improve our knowledge.

I'm sorry that you were dissapointed with that article. We have fun doing what we do and we hope to continue to improve the quality of our work.
