I'd only listen to MUSE if I were in hell and the devil had taken away the John Denver option.

I'll agree about John Denver being at the bottom of my list; however, I don't think I'll ever fully understand your disdain for Muse.

I know this is going to upset a bunch of you but I honestly would have to put Hendrix at near the top of my "overrated" list. Talented? Yes. Overrated? Most definitely.

Synister Gates / Zachy Vengence (Sorry, I like Avenged Sevenfold)

Good one. Nothing wrong with Avenged Sevenfold.

The overrated....

Kurt Cobain

The Edge (U2)

Kurt Cobain was a terrible guitar player, I do like Nirvana a lot. The Edge is just awful, I agree.

I've got one that is either really underrated or maybe I'm the Cardinal's GM in evaluating talent. But one name that I have not seen is Nuno Bettoncourt(sp?) from Extreme. I know their songs or lyrics might not have been that popular, but that dude can play. If you've ever tried playing one of his songs, you would think 3 hands were being used. Of course, I really sucked at guitar and gave it up, but I"m saying he could make it look effortless.

Steve Rothery (Marillion)

Al Pitrelli (Savatage, TSO, Megadeth, Asia)

John Petrucci (Dream Theater)

Alex Lifeson (Rush)

Andy LaRocque (King Diamond)

Brian May (Queen)

Honorable Mention: Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, Steve Morse, Richie Blackmore, Yngwie Malmsteen, Steve Howe, Criss Oliva

You're bound to end up with some minor travesties in a thread such as this, and here are my picks for said travesties - Leo Kotke wasn't named in the first ten posts... It took over 50 posts for anyone to mention Robert Randolph... I am the first to mention John Mayer. Seriousy - if you think he's "Your Body is a Wonderland", see/hear him live... No Pete Townshend?... I can't possibly rank for this topic, but if anyone needs a tiebreaker, Jimi Hendrix never could read music (he played by linking certain moods/notes with colors), and he played a left-handed guitar. He was right-handed. Unreal. Again, I love guitar/ists WAY too much to be able to discern between the Claptons & Pages. Has anyone mentioned Stevie Ray Vaughn?

Valpo, nice call on the Petrucci. That guy is an animal!

1. John Petrucci (Dream Theater) - If you can get past the 10 minute songs & crazy time changes, he really does play with a purpose and not one of those 1000 note-per-second guys.

2. Pete Lesperance (Harem Scarem) - Outstanding tone. Check out the instrumental "Mandy" or "See Saw" or the solo on "No Justice". From one of the most underrated & unknown melodic rock bands ever IMO.

3. Paul Gilbert (Mr. Big) - Paul on Mr. Big's first record: "It has more chops than a butcher shop". Master of string skipping. Another guy that can play with feel, but his reputation says "fret-burner".

4. Criss Oliva (Savatage) - Before his untimely death, he finished EDGE OF THORNS. Masterful. Check out the title track or the subtlety of "All That I Bleed".

5. Jerry Cantrell (Alice In Chains) - Heavy, heavy, heavy, but somehow there was always a sweeter tone in there.

I could've went the normal way & picked Hendrix, EVH, Knopfler, but I tend to rebel against the popular picks & try to enlighten others to new things. Besides every time there's a new BEST OF list it always ends the same way. Thought I'd change it up.

Hendrix was left-handed, but played a right-handed guitar (upside down) as does Eric Gales. Not tryin' to be a smart guy.... just sayin'.

You're my new favorite poster, Shawn. I thought for sure I'd be the only one who listed Criss (on page 3). Agreed about "All That I Bleed" ... also love his solos in "Can You Hear Me Now", "Conversation Piece", "Temptation Revelation", "Edge of Thorns", and "Summer's Rain". Criss was on the cusp of releasing his own solo album and really starting to get some notoriety when a drunk driver tragically crossed that center line in Florida.....

Dangit! Good call - in fact, as I re-read my post (which probably was better suited for the drunk thread!), I thought... wait, I got the handed-ness mixed up. Thanks for keeping the truth alive!
