Does Matsui make any sense?

I would prefer to move Braun to left and find a 3B. But the Yankees supposedly are trying to trade Matsui to free up money for Santana's extension. Assuming the Yankees eat a little of the contract, wouldn't he be the perfect addition to the middle of the lineup? Last year, he had 100 runs scored, 103 RBIs, slugged, .488 with an OBP of .367. I assume his numbers would go down a bit w/o Jeter and A-Rod but he would be the left handed stick to complement what we already have. What's the price they'd be looking for? Would Cappy, TGJ, and another decent player be enough?

I read Matsui has a full no trade clause, so he'd have to agree to come here. He's also, I've read, likes NY a lot, and does not want to leave. One report said he'd be embarrassed to get get shipped out and would fight it. Again, just something I read last week or so.

Matsui would fit the bill of a solid left handed power hitter who doesn't strike out a lot and has a good on base percentage.

Interestingly, he's hit lefties just as well as righties (actually, a little better of the past three years - .868 OPS vs lefties and .860 vs righties.).

It would be nice to bring out a guy who could play everyday.

If something like this happend, there is still the option of moving Hart to CF, Hall to 3B, and Braun to RF, with Matsui in LF.

Melvin has said that Hall isn't going to move from CF, but you have to wonder how set in stone that is. I suspect he doesn't want to move Hall to 3B, and is thus saying that to anyone who asks. But if push comes to shove, you never know.

Hideki Matsui makes plenty of sense, Iwould love to get him. He would fit very nicely in the two hole for the Brewers, I think Matsui is a better hitter than Fukudome.

Matsui has two years left in his contract at a reasonable price, but he has a complete no-trade clause. He might need some persuasion to waive his no-trade for the Brewers.

I like this scenario. Defensively, you upgrade 3rd and maybe center a little, and you should be ok in left and right. Offensively you get almost exactly what you want out of the two hole. I like Braun in right because of his cannon. Plus, maybe his throws will be more accurate from the right side of the field.

The timeframe would be good too. Trade Matsui next off-season or even mid-season if Laporta is ready. Or you could trade Laporta and move Gamel to LF now and maybe he is ready by 2010. (?)

Hart was worse than Hall defensively in CF last year statistically and Hall was below average at 3B in 2006, Matsui is a slightly below average LFer, you have to imagine Braun would be below average in RF for next year at least. Not really sure you upgrade the defense all that much.

Yes.

Don't think that New York doesn't know what they've got with Matsui (not that anyone is). As valuable as he'd be in our lineup, you could argue that he's even moreso in the Yanks'. And if the next-best option for LF is a one-year-older-and-named-in-the-Mitchell-Report Johnny Damon, ask yourself what you'd do.

If we could lure him away with some of our SP, I'd like it. I just don't know if we could (without adding Sheets to a larger deal).

Not disagreeing, just wondering what you base this on? Metrics I've seen had Hart in the middle of the pack and Hall in the bottom quarter.

http://spreadsheets.google.com/pub?key=pfk_WuYpfduzefA8-s0_iYw&gid=6

Hall comes in at -2.7, he was much worse in the first half but was above average in CF in the 2nd half.

Hart comes in at -3.5 in less playtime.

Hart was +2.4 in more playtime in RF.

Fielding needs more than a full season to really be a viable judge of talent so this is all grey area, especially Hart in CF since it was such a small sample.

I can rarely understand him, but then again I don't speak his native tongue. (i'll be here all week folks!)

Seriously though, I think he's exactly the type of player that we need, but I shudder to think what we'd have to give up to satisfy the Yankees and more importantly, get him to waive his no-trade to come here.
