Jim Edmonds to SD, David Freese to STL

I think this means Rolen is even more available if this guy is any kind of 3b prospect.

Freese was in the high-A California League last year, so he's not a candidate to replace Rolen this season. SD has some 3b prospect depth though with Headley (and Kouzmanoff in the majors), and they really needed an OF.

So much for 'Jenks landing in SoCal.

The Brewers need a lefthanded bat either/both in LF & 3B. If they get Rolen (and then obviously move Braun to LF) they will be strictly a RH lineup unless you want Ned to have TGJ and Gross and Counsell playing more than you and I would definitely want to see.

Edmonds really should have hung it up a year or two ago...I don't think he has much left, especially if he's going to be playing at Petco. I don't think this necessarily disqualifies the Padres from signing Jenkins, though -- I think this trade is more a reaction to Mike Cameron breaking off contract talks with them than anything.

Well, I don't think you ever get more than one pick for a player. Also, I might be wrong, but I don't think you get a pick if the player retires? I think it's only if you lose them to free agency. Edmonds has been very clear that this is his last year. Also, not so sure Edmonds will qualify as a type A by the end of next year. I kinda expect the Cardinals will have a pretty high pick after next year based on thier probably finish. This will probably push them even higher in draft order.

I really don't get this move at all. The Cardinals are going to be terrible this year anyway. We are rebuilding for 2009, and have a ton of payroll clearing after this year. But, Edmonds only had one year left and it was 8 million. Not a ton of salary as far as centerfielders are going. If he puts up an OPS anywhere near .800 it's a good deal. But, really, one year of an 8 million sunk cost isn't that big of a deal in the large scheme of things. Even when you suck, you want the fans to come for something. Jimmy was an icon in StL. What was the harm in one last hoo-rah? Colby Rasmus is our centerfielder of the future, but he's not due to arrive until mid-season. I was kinda looking forward to Jimmy showing him the ropes late summer.

And, if you are going to trade him, why wait until the market for centerfielders is over?

So far, Mozeliak is hard to read. His best "moves" so far are not making moves. Jocketty would have undoubtedly been searching for stop-gap veterans and wasting payroll for marginal players. WJ would have probably also brought back So Taguchi, Gary Bennett, David Eckstein, Mike Maroth. Mo gets a plus for not giving into that temptation.

Cesar Izturis and this move, though? I don't get that at all.

I don't understand this statement Ray. Please clarify. Brewers have 4 picks coming from losing Cordero and Linebrink. If my math is correct that's 2 picks per player. Also, I believe you are correct about a retiree not getting draft picks.

Yeah, I don't think this is really a fire sale. More like a scratch and dent sale.

As far as his no-trade clause goes, Edmonds has said before that he wouldn't veto a trade... and I suppose if you gave me the opportunity to go to a place like San Diego for a year, who am I to refuse? http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif

You are right Jeenius. I didn't phrase that well at all. I kinda was running with the assumption that Edmonds wouldn't qualifiy as a type A. I meant you don't get more than one pick for the type of player Edmonds will leave his contract at.

Edmonds said he would waive his clause if it was to a Southern Cali team close to his home.

Guess the Padres fit the bill.

Edmonds came out somewhere between a below average and just above average fielder last year and he was pretty terrible with the bat. I think they realized he was hurting the team more than helping it long term. Not really a fire sale, just cutting dead weight.

I don't think it's as easy as that Ennder.

He was already signed through last year. They (WJ) extended him for this year. That was just plain stupid. There was no reason for it.

In regards to the trade, though, I just don't see where this salary dump is worth it.

If he were blocking players, had a multi-year contract, if the money could be used to make us a 90 win team (ha!), or if it gained us a decent prospect...I could see it.

However, it was pretty much just a straight salary dump saving one year and around $6 million dollars.

It's pretty much a given we will be sub-par in 2008. It's doubtful we will best .500 or finish in the top half of the division.

It's also fairly likely Rolen might be moved by season's end.

So, in a subpar season, you hypothetically move two of the three franchise icons (Pujols, Edmonds, Rolen). What does this do to ticket sales? What does it do to merchandising sales? Edmonds stuff was a top seller. How much does this disenfranchise the common fan? Is the lost revenue from these things worth the difference when subtracted from the $6+ million? Does this curb the likelyhood Jimmy will come and wave with the rest of the folks in the convertibles on publicity days?

This move seems to save marginal dollars for no real gain to me.
