I Am Legend

BuckyTuba

it was actually very slow...i thought omega man might have actually been better...really, the first 30 minutes of 28 days later covers everything here quite nicely...

it had it's moments, but it was easy-cheese for the most part..

I was planning on waiting for this to come on DVD because IMO many zombie movies end up being kinda lame, but i did really like 28 Days Later. Mix in the Will Smith factor and i assumed that this movie wouldn't be good enough to be worth paying theater prices to see it.

There is a film company called "Asylum" that produces and then releases knock off versions of big Hollywood movies. This week "I am Omega" debuted. After watching the entire thing (it started off as curiosity, ended like bad car crash. We couldn't look away despite on screen disaster) I'm sure I will love IAL simply by comparison.

Asylum's other big films this year included "TransMORPHers", "Pirates of Treasure Island", "The Hillside Cannibals" and coming soon - Alien Vs....(wait for it) Hunter.

Turns into a zombe movie with CGI monsters? Not what I was hoping for, personally.

Well I went and saw the movie this weekend.

The CGI monsters were over the top. I think CGI effects have their place in Fantasy type movies -- but they look out of place in Action/Horror movies. The "Infected" in 28 Days Later were way more effective (e.g.)

I believe "Omega" & "Legend" are both adaptations of the same novel.

Right -- However I would phrase it as follows "Legend is a modern-day adaptation of Omega" -- that is to say Legend strays further from the book than Omega Man did. The Legend film is closer to the Omega movie than the book IMO.

I haven't read it, but the novel I Am Legend by Richard Matheson is well regarded as a genre classic. One of these days I'm going to pick up that book.

The movies don't do Matheson's book justice -- He also wrote Stir of Echos -- Which was a Kevin Bacon film about 10 years ago and What Dreams May Come -- which starred Cuba Gooding and Robin Williams. I certainly echo Kat's recommendation -- Matheson is a great author.

I get angrier and angrier the more I think about how they butchered the ending. Had nothing to do with the ending of the book, and essentially backstabbed any of the issues the source material was trying to convey.

Agreed 100% -- If you are a fan of the book, the movie will piss you off. Especially the voice-over as the movie is ending -- which is 100% different in intent of the book, almost as if the movie was giving the book the finger.

That said, I think if you aren't attached to the book, I think that the movie is entertaining enough.

I saw it yesterday. It was "ok". worth the few bucks and time. Smith's acting was a pretty big surprise. He conveyed the complete isolation, the need and want and ultimate replacement of human interaction.

But then it degrades to a Zombie Movie of some sort. Your average big smart bad zombie trying to get the good guy. And I didn't care for the entire "god told" me stuff. Seemed to put faith as a main theme in an otherwise man made disaster. Seemed out of line for most of the theme of the movie.

**** SPOILERISH ****

What I didn't' care for, was the scene where Neville gets trapped by the smart bad zombie guy, he frees himself and the bad zombie guy releases his dogs. But the dogs are smart enough to sit at the line of the sun and not attack till it disappears. I think that's reaching. I mean come on, if Humans degrade to the point of having a rabid taste for blood and violence how on earth could an animal become so intelligent to not cross a sliver of light?

Don't forget, once the sliver disappears the zombie walks back into the darkness rather then attack Neville. That marked the beginning of the end for me, where they threw out all convention and went for a Disnesy-esque ending. Boo.

Yeah noticed that as well. Maybe he saw that Neville had a gun and decided to risk it. He wounded him enough and killed his best friend.

Don't get me wrong, the movie was ok. I just think it could have been way better if they removed some cheese.

I saw this movie yesterday and I was a little disappointed. I guess going from AVPR to I Am Legend in the same day, would make it out that way. The movie had its moments. Typical Will Smith in it. I could of done without some of the stuff in there, but overall it was a 7 out of a 10.

Did anyone else notice this....during the scene where Neville is hunting game in Times Square, you can see some of the billboard ads behind him. One of them showed a Superman logo and Batman logo intertwined, and what appeared to be a release date of 2010 at the bottom of the poster.

Could this be some sort of "easter egg" hint that they are working on a Superman/Batman movie? Are there any rumblings that a script is in the works? I know it's always rumored in some capacity.

Ok I thought I was the only one who saw that. It could be an "easter egg." I mean they made it to a point to show it and show it long enough for people to see but, not unless your not looking at the details in the scene.

next to the superman/batman movie poster they also had another legally blonde movie, interesting

my take on the dogs not crossing the sunlight line, is that they would run through the temporary pain, like dogs do with electric fences

movie was okay, didn't really like the ending, never read the book, going to see aliens vs predator tonight...

I've heard that the Batman/Superman thing was just a joke (referring to screenwriter Akiva Goldsman's connection to a "Superman vs. Batman" movie that was never produced).

Yeah it was. He was attached to the SM/BM movie was shelved years ago. He was responsible for all the fictitious movie ads in the movie.

I was pretty psyched when I saw the preview for the first time ... seemed classy, thoughtful, interesting, dramatic. Then I saw the alien zombie looking creatures, moaned out loud, and cursed Hollywood for its incessant dreadfulness. Another I Robot, Men in Black, Wild Wild West -- I should have known better.

Did everyone else see the 4-5 minute bank robbery scene from The Dark Knight before the movie started?

I saw the movie at an IMAX theater which was cool. However, the CGI zombies were not that impressive looking. I have another question. Will Smith had a rifle with a scope. Just how close did he need to get to the deer before he wanted to take a shot at it? He could have picked it off from 2 football fields away.

The Batman prologue is only running in the imax theaters. The regular theaters only get the regular preview.

I rented this last night and thought it was a good rental. I liked the director's patience in building up Will Smith's character and thought he did a nice job builidng up the tension in the scary parts. Having said that, the CGI was over the top and there were some plot holes (see Kat's comment above).

Just out of curiosity, how did the book end? I wanted Will Smith and the woman and kid he was saving to die right after they found the cure. That would have been a cool twist. Granted that would have failed miserably with American audiences.

Just a heads up....there is another "everyone is dead but a few people" movie in production right now. It's a rendition of Cormac McCarthy's (No Country for Old Men) novel "The Road" starring Viggo Mortenson as a dad who takes his son on a long journey by foot in a post apocolyptic US. A few people I've talked too cried at the end of the book - wonder if the movie will be as powerful.

The director is the same guy that did The Proposition which is a pretty highly acclaimed Australian "western".

Viggo isn't in it anymore. Guy Pearce replaced him. Also Nick Cave and Warren Ellis will be scoring the film. They also scored The Proposition and The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford.
