MIN signs Adam Everett (1yr/2.8M + 200k in incentives)

Hammer

He is going to be traded or released this evening due to the Tejada trade.

I know that Everett is not as good offensively as Tejada but he is worlds better with the glove. He is definately going to change the demand for Bill Hall...

Brad Ausmus has Adam Everett to thank for making him look major league roster worthy. It is hard to believe that a major league team could actually have had two players with such a weak bat starting for them, heck it is hard to believe that either one of them should be starting with the total lack of offense they provide. If they played in the AL, teams would reqeust that they have their pitchers bat so they could DH for Ausmus or Everett.

Everett is a younger version of Craig Counsell, and we already have one of those. No thanks.

Besides, Hardy is a plus-defender and with some experience could be a Gold Glove caliber SS -- more in the mold of Cal Ripken than Ozzie Smith, of course.

With the way some of the talk/dreaming/problem-solving is going amongst fans this off-season, the only two starting position players not considered as possible solutions at other positions are Jason Kendall and Prince Fielder. Hardy is a SS.

man, it seems that every name that comes up, someone here wants him.

a big pass on this guy...

I know it is hard to get used to for some, but we will actually be in then hunt for the play-offs this year, signing losers like this is a thing of the past.

Counsell was never anywhere near as good as Everett with the glove. A lot of fielding guys think Everett is better than Ozzie was. While the offense would suffer some assuming Hardy is an average 3B and Braun isn't that much worse than Gross/Dillon in LF this move would probably save the team 60+ runs.

I'm not afraid of having a single poor stick in the line up. And moving Hardy would be a dream come true for me (I really don't like his dfense). Braun to LF. Keep Hall. Now move multiple SPs and prospects for big time starter (Bedard?) and the Crew might actually take the division.

It's one thing to say that Everett will save some runs, (let's even say 50). But his stick is woefully bad. He's easily going to create 50 less runs than an .800-.850 OPS 3rd sacker or LFer (if one is found and traded for). His OBP the last 3 years has been .290, .290, and .281. That's not even "bad", that's pathetic. It's one thing to trade off "some" offense for a good glove, but Everett is almost like having another pitcher in the lineup.

End is exactly correct. Last year among SS and Catchers with a minimum of 200 plate appearances, Everett was 36th among 36 eligible SS in OPS and Kendall was 38th among 38 catchers in OPS.

There are a lot better options than signing Everett and moving Hardy to 3B. The bottom of the lineup would be as ugly as it could get with Kendall and Everett, any regression of Hardy or injury elsewhere and that lineup would be even more top heavy. One could argue for batting Gallardo and Bush 7th when they pitch if Kendall and Everett were both playing that day.

Hardy is not a plus defender if you factor in range.

That being said, Everett's non-tender just proves that good field, no-hit guys are plentiful enough that you don't need to offer them multi year deals at age 35 like the Brewers did with Counsell.

Cal Ripken who is considered one of the greatest SS of all time had no range. It is called posistioning and making the routine play. Hardy is an above average defender no matter which way you look at it. Hardy makes as many plays to each side of him like the rest of the league.

He comes out as slightly above average and in the top 15 SS's in baseball overall. Hardy was +6.5 runs last season which was 9th overall in baseball.

Thanks Ender I knew one of the stats guys would have info to show Hardy is not a bad defensive player that some think he is. I can see it by watching the games.

The Twins are paying Adam Everett up to $3 mil? We could be paying Craig Counsell less this year...

Have the Twins actually managed to get worse on the infield? After starting last year with Castilla at second, Bartlett at short and Punto at third, they've devolved into some strange congealing of Everett, Punto, Alexi Casilla, Brian Buscher, Brendan Harris, Matt Macri and Matt Tolbert. Oof. Oof! Oof...
