MIL re-signs Seth McClung, Greg Aquino, and Mike Rivera

Both have more upside than Wise, both can be sent to the minors I think, both are younger, both are cheaper, none of them are likely to make the 25 man roster. That is the real key to this, Wise most likely was not going to make the team so why offer him arby?

I agree that I'd rather have Wise on the 40 man, but I am not sure he would make the 25 and that is where the problem is.

Ahh well that changes things a bit. To be fair I'd say Aquino was right in line with Wise the last 2 seasons.

Wise 2007 - 4.19 ERA, 3.83 FIP, 4.84 xFIP, 7.1 K/9, 2.8 BB/9, 34.9% GB
Wise 2006 - 3.86 ERA, 4.71 FIP, 4.77 xFIP, 5.6 K/9, 2.9 BB/9, 44.9% GB

Aquino 2006- 4.47 ERA, 4.87 FIP, 4.10 xFIP, 9.0 K/9, 4.2 BB/9, 47.9% GB
Aquino 2007 - 4.50 ERA, 4.27 FIP, 3.93 xFIP, 7.9 K/9, 3.3 BB/9, 39% GB

Aquino is 3 years younger, cheaper and doesn't have the emotional baggage Wise has from the HBP. I don't know whether it is the right move as it is pretty close but I don't think it is a terrible move. If McClung makes the 25 man roster I think it is a mistake taking him over Wise though.

If you ignore things like home run rate and the fact Aquino only pitched in blowouts in 2006 and couldn't hack it all in 2007 for his 13 innings, you might think that.

I still think that any past history of Wise is moot until you can be certain that his head's in the right place. I feel that DFAing him was due to Melvin not believing Wise was going to be his old self. If that's the case, I'd rather he work on getting it together with another team. Aquino was less-than-awe-inspiring player last year. It seems Melvin really sees something in him that he likes.

Someone, I have no idea who, probably an awesome guy that's super cool and may even be posting in the thread at the moment but like I said who knows, asked TH in his latest blog how much McClung and Aquino were making, and he answered that dude's question.

McClung: $750K

Aquino: $500K

That guy rules.

Wise has never been a high leverage RP. FIP doesn't adjust for HR's so the fact Aquino did close to the same overall in FIP removes the HR factor. If you take a real honest look at their stats the difference is not huge and the difference in contracts does make things pretty even between the two. If Aquino has no options left I'd rather have Wise but it isn't the type of move that is going to cost the team more than 1 game in my opinion. Wise had a lot of luck in 2005 and other than that he hasnt' been anything special.
