What about Dan Haren?

Recommended Posts

I'd do it if we had the ability to sign him to a long term deal, but we don't, so I wouldn't. I dream of the time when the Crew could trade Weeks, Parra, and Escobar for Haren, and then give him a 5 year 90 mil contract.

Come to think of it, if we could get both I'd trade Weeks, Hardy, Hart, Bush, and Capuano. Then I'd sign Blanton to a 5 year 75 mil and Haren to above contract. That should sew up the division for 5 years.

Blanton to Milwaukee for Chris Capuano and Dave Bush would also make sense. The Brewers need quality more than quantity when it comes to starting pitching, and it would allow them to save a little money.

That's a little rich for my blood but maybe others out there are higher on Blanton than I am. Not a terrible trade but also not one I'm overly excited about.

Wow. We are talking about Joe Blaton, right? The one with a career ERA+ of 105, in a pitchers park nonetheless? Why not just toss in Fielder and Braun and get Huston Street and Rich Harden right away. Then we'd be the 27' Yankees.

Obviously it would be amazing to get Haren, but not when you think about what it would cost. Really, I think the Brewers just need to find a third baseman and their team is set. If they stood pat right now they'd still have a good shot at the playoffs.

I see us landing Haren is if we give up Sheets to a club willing to give up some prospects (LA, NYY, Bos) which go to Oakland. We'd have to add at least a solid young player to upgrade to Haren. Highly unlikely. No way does Gwynn and Jackson land us Haren. He's a top ten MLB starter under his team's control for 3 more years.

Yeah, I went back and looked at Blanton's number and you're probably right. I'll take, take-backs on that call. But I'd still trade one of the young guys plus a major prospect and SP for Haren, and then look for another quality pitcher and take my chances against the Cubs. It's the Cubs afterall. My point is, what if the Crew had four awesome starters with Braun and Fielder anchoring the offense.

So, Beane would add payroll as he tears it all down and rebuilds? I don't think the author thought that one through, to say the least. Haren would take Carlos V and another top prospect, and probably a 3rd guy.

Haren is a bit like Carl Crawford in that both are young quality players that are also signed to team friendly contracts, thus making them even more valuable. It would take a hefty package to get him and we might not even have the pieces Beane would want. I'd guess maybe Villanueva and Parra would both need to be included, along with another highly thought of prospect.

Well I would think that of all the ace-quality pitchers out there, that Haren would be the most appealing to the Brewers, given his contract status and the fact he once pitched in the NL Central. As long as CV the Younger doesn't become the new "Dan Haren", I can't imagine how this would be that bad of a deal. All these young players are going to have their contracts inflate exponentially in the next couple of years, and while we should be able to pay some, others will be forced to be traded. My only fear if you give up both Parra and CV is that the next pitcher to be called up from AAA would seem to be ZachJack... But Claudio Vargas is our long man. So we have that going for us.... which is nice.

I really like Parra, maybe more than most people, and Villanueva. I would be very happy going into next season with both guys in our rotation.

But neither one has really shown that he can be a consistent mid-rotation starter. Villy has done it for parts of two seasons, but only parts, and his peripheral numbers have been so-so. Parra, of course, has a major injury history. I'm not saying "they haven't proved it because they haven't done it," which always strikes me as a weak argument without more. I'm saying that what they have done leaves us with good reasons to doubt whether they can do it.

If we could get Haren for those two guys plus a top prospect, I would make the deal. If we could substitute Cappy or Bush for one of the youngsters, all the better.

Greg.
