Should we hire a psychologist to work with Turnbow in the off-season?

adambr2

You know, it's looking more and more like Turnbow may very well be our closer going into the 2008 season. As we know, this could be outstanding, or this could be a disaster. Just imagine how solid we could be and how much less worry we'd have about our bullpen if Turnbow was in his 2005 form with Riske setting him up.

I'm no expert, but is sure seems to me that Turnbow's problems are a good 90% psychological. We know he has the tools. Heck, he may have better tools than Cordero. So why not use some of Mark A.'s cash to hire a psychologist to work with him this off-season? The financial investment would be almost nothing, and the return could be significant if he can help Turnbow overcome his problems with his head on the field.

What do you guys think?

I don't think it can hurt. It may be psychological but he also had control problem for the majority of his career. He got released by LAA even though he had great stuff because he had no control. Maybe this is just who he is and the most we can hope for is effectivly wild. Either way I'm sure it oculd help him deal with hte inevidtable boos when he walks someone.
There needs to be a King Thames version of the bible.

I think, and I'm gonna do it, that what Derrick needs is a standing ovation when he comes outta the pen in his first game next year. Lets not forget he gave us some awesome moments, an All-Star appearance, and we picked him up when other teams thought he was a goner. I'd like to find a DT once every 2/3 years.

Turnbow has great movement, good velocity and bad comment. I don't think anything is going to chance that at this point in his career.

And I'd put the chances at Turnbow being the closer for 2008 at maybe 50%, personally. Plenty of time left for Melvin to continue his search.

I don't know, Melvin was quoted saying this:

One thing seems pretty certain: The Brewers won't be trading for a closer. When I asked Melvin about that prospect, he said, "We have a closer. Derrick Turnbow."

Something inside of me tells me Doug is telling the truth here, and he's just gonna stick with the in house solution, scary as it may be. Honestly, I'd prefer that to trading or spending oogles of money on a closer.

So who else immediately thought of Roger Clemens clucking like a chicken the moment they read the title of this thread? Looked for a screen capture to post, but google did not save me....

How many times has Melvin said one thing and done the exact opposite? Every time? He'd be a complete fool if he said publicly that no one on the current roster could be the closer.

If the Brewers weren't smart enough to try this in '06 when Turnbow was losing his job I don't think they'll be smart enough to win a championship. It would be a sign that they are not efficiently using their resources as they'll need to to beat the big spending teams.

Again, I never recall Doug saying something and doing another. I asked for examples a while back, and am still waiting.

O come on now. I think it was andthat that just mentioned his "not motivated to trade Overbay" silliness. Overbay didn't have a place to position to play at the next year! Saying that he "lies" is probably an overstatement but he's more than happy to mislead if he thinks it might give him an advantage (like any good GM).

I guess I read the Overbay quote to mean he was not going to auction him off like Santana. Obviously they had 2 1B, and Prince was not being dealt. However, he would have kept him had he got nothing but lowball offers.

Now, if he would have said "Lyle will be with the team next April", I'd call that a lie.

Melvin insinuated that he could have been moved to the outfield if needed, which I think we all know was not going to happen. Overbay was not going to be on the team the following year.

Just because Turnbow is starting the year at closer doesnt' mean they will keep him there. Also the Turnbow is a closer comment came before the Riske and Torres signings as far as I know. Things have changed a bit so the position is probably more up for grabs now.

I'd rather see Turnbow working with a pitching coach to get comfortable enough throwing a changeup, sinker, or splitter so that batters can't sit all over the fastball if/when he struggles with control on the breaking ball.

The only pitcher on the Brewers who could use a good head-shrinking is Matt Wise.

'We have a closer- Derrick Turnbow.'

'We're fine with Derrick Turnbow as our closer'

'We're not going to pursue any of the free-agent closers.'

Etc.

I think Doug would upgrade anywhere he could. He did say several times he would not trade a member of the core for a closer. Turnbow was the closer, but now I assume he's not. If he would have accepted an offer from TEX, they would not have had a chance for him.

Again, did he say, "Gagne will not be on our team", or "I have no interest in Gagne"?
