BA's Brewer Report

patrickgpe
BA's Prospect Handbook is in stores. Picked up my copy last night at the southridge barnes and noble. Our organization ranking was 5 and to no one's surprise Gallardo was named the top prospect. I get this book every year, but will probably pick up the Minor League Baseball Analyst 2007 book as well.

I haven't received my book yet, but I read in the Sporting News thread (Major League Forum) that Mark Rogers is still ranked 5th. That surprises me. I don't doubt that he has the talent, but at some point you have to show results, don't you? 2007 looks to be a wasted year with the injury. Having not read his profile yet, I wonder if the BA guys are still projecting Rogers in the Brewers' future rotation, or if they have started to look at him as a reliever (judging by the #5 ranking, they must still be seeing him as a starter - I wish I could - I don't see it happening). Homer Bailey might find himself in the big leagues at some point in 2007, and Rogers can't get himself out of A ball (Bailey was a more advanced pitcher coming out of high school, though). Rogers is about to turn 21 in a couple of days, so there's lots of time left for him, but I'd really like to see some results.

Please don't remind me of Homer "Cy Young"Bailey anymore. There is no comparison between him and Rogers. Bottom line our scouting staff screwed up when they took Rogers. The saving grace is we got Yo Gallardo in the 2nd round and there isn't much difference between him and Bailey. They will both dominate in the majors for the next 15 + years barring injuries.

I agree, they messed up on Bailey, but when you get someone quality in the 2nd round, it makes it more bearable. Just wish someone in our division didn't take him instead.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again, the problem isn't that the Brewers didn't take Bailey, the problem is that the Brewers didn't take Bailey OR Jeremy Sowers.

I'll take Sowers over Bailey any day of the week. Bailey may look like a future ace, but having Sowers would have already given the Brewers a solid, already proven fourth starter heading into 2007, and would have made Jeff Suppan completely unecessary.

So just stop with the "we should have taken Bailey" crap http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif .

ditto. Isn't there a statute of limitations on number of months/years you can complain about a draft pick?

We've placed the notifications for the other BA team reports in their own thread, but we'll have a separate thread for Brewer discussion. Since this thread was already begun, we'll include the free link here:

www.baseballamerica.com/t...63202.html

Tom Haudricourt will chat with subscribers about the Brewers system at 1 p.m. ET today, noon central.

We'll please remind subscribers that we need to respect the pay-site aspect of BA, and be thankful our friends there provide as much "free" info as they do.

Please do not copy directly from the chat transcript later today. We'll determine who among Brewerfan staff may "generalize" things from the chat.

I personally don't have a problem with Haudricourt conducting the chat. I do know he stays on top of things very closely from a minor league perspective, even if the nuances of a major daily newspaper and the need to focus on the big league club for the general reading public don't always allow his insights on the kids to come through at the JS.

As long as the chat focuses on the kids and not on how Tom is qualified to discuss the kids, the diehards may learn a thing or two day, and the more casual followers should learn quite a bit -- although the more casual fans won't be your BA subscribers -- oh well, now I'm talking in circles...

I just want to emphasize Mass' point about Haudricourt, hoping people don't pile on the guy.

I will try to summarize the chat later today, bringing up some of the more interesting points, unless someone beats me to it.

EDIT: And while we've seen this picture of Gallardo before, it's always fun seeing the young kids.

So did Kevin Roberts get all his friends and family together to ask about him? Seems to be an inordinate number of questions about a player outside the top 30.

A brief and incomplete summary, with multiple questions on the same player somewhat combined:

Brad Nelson, not a prospect.

System is still strong despite graduating its top talent.

Cain is a great athlete with lots of upside, but still needs plate discipline, ultimately might move to a corner as the fills out.

Brent Brewer is a great athlete but raw both offensively and defensively.

Jeffress could project as a closer, throws 100 mph, but will remain a starter for now.

Kevin Roberts (so many Kevin Roberts questions): close to the top 30, profiles well as a reliever, used to swing a nice bat.

Salome is healthy, the team likes him, and he has opportunity given the state of catching in the system.

Sarfate impressed the team, strong candidate for the roster this year.

The Rogers rating came before his surgery, and there are obviously questions about him now; current plan for him is fall instructional league. Some discussion of the trend of drafting HS pitching, and how they might go easy on Jeffress and Seidel.

Much love for Villanueva, no longer a rookie.

Braun?s defense questioned by scouts, but the Brewers want to give him every opportunity to stick at third. Koskie issues could speed up his timetable considerably.

Some sleepers, late-round gems, and/or near-misses for the Top 30: Roberts (as mentioned), Robert Hinton, Ryan Crew (gritty!), Brendan Katin, R.J. Seidel, Brantley, Ben Stancyzk.

I've left out plenty here, like Yo Gallardo is great, because it's not really news.

And one direct quote that I found intriguing, for a whole variety of reasons:

Quote:
Eveland was given a tremendous chance to carve a niche for himself when Sheets and Ohka were injured last year, and flopped badly. He could probably use a little fine tuning in both conditioning and attitude. The Brewers realize they could regret the move later but Eveland just didn't appear ready to contribute anytime soon, and they want to win now.

Thank you for the recap SoCal. It's always appreaciated that the BF.net team takes the time to recap a lot of these pay chats.

Loved the response on Dana. The chat stated that Angel was healthy. Is Angel healthy enough to have an invite to catch at the big league camp? I don't remeber seeing that anywhere.

It's not like all the Kevin Roberts questions had to be selected by BA and Tom unless there simply weren't enough questions coming in at the time. It's too bad that BA chooses to make most of their chats a pay feature, because it certainly limits the number of questioners and variety of questions.

In fairness to Haudricourt, he did seem to be trying to answer every question seemingly in the order in which he received them, as my questions were answered one by one through the middle of the chat (one of which he came out and said he did not know the answer, if he was being selective, he could have chosen to just not answer a question he didn't know the answer to). And, he did come out and say he wouldn't be taking any more Kevin Roberts questions.

As SoCal noted, I don't think we really learned anything in today's chat, but I think we all know that we tend to know more information about the Brewers from top to bottom than almost everyone else combined.

I don't recall ever hearing anything about his attitude. Was anything ever reported on this?
