The OFFICIAL Rule 5 Draft Thread

Rotoworld's take:

Padres selected second baseman Callix Crabbe from the Brewers in the second round of the Rule 5 draft.
Crabbe was the fourth and final position player chosen. Despite standing 5-foot-7 (if that), Crabbe has some pop in his bat, finishing at .287/.377/.435 in his first year at Triple-A. Unfortunately, he's not an asset anywhere other than second base and he's not a very good basestealer despite above average speed. We're rooting for him, but he's a long shot to have a career. He'll be in the mix to start at second base for the Padres if the team fails to add a veteran.

A great opportunity for Callix, indeed. The Padres have a black hole at second base right now, heck if San Diego wasn't a "contending" team, you could almost pencil Crabbe in as the player with the best opportunity to be their Opening Day starter. Certainly the Padres will look to supplement things, but that's a heck of a landing spot for Callix. Good for him.

And nice to see Bo Hall get a chance at a clean start in the minor league phase with the Yanks.

Crabbe to SD is indeed a good match...it remains to be seen whether he'll stick, as they have some other options floating around, but that's as good an opportunity as he's likely to find. Not a pretty park for the stats, though...

Good luck to CC...wouldn't mind getting him back, but it's hard to see where he fits in Milwaukee. It could also be that if the Pads like him, but can't keep him on the big league roster, they'd send us a minor leaguer in lieu of returning Crabbe. We'll see.

The knock on him is he "can't play SS" whatever that means.

It means that he can't play shortstop with any effectiveness. If he could, the Brewers would have played him there in the minors.

It sucks losing Crabbe, because he had value. Unfortunately, it wasn't the kind of value the Brewers could do much with due to his defensive shortcomings (he's 5'6... hah... shortcomings). I would have liked to have kept him on the 40-man over a number of other players, but in the end I don't think it'll matter much.

Maybe we can get Garrison back?

Edit: I'd also like to express that I'm happy Crabbe is getting the opportunity. I'd rather that opportunity would have come with the Brewers, but it's a good chance for Callix. I hope he does well against everyone but us.

From Tom Haudricort's JS Blog:

The Brewers actually were happy for Crabbe, who was blocked at the big-league level by Rickie Weeks and at the minor league level by Hernan Iribarren, who is expected to move up and play second at Nashville in 2008.

"I'm happy he'll get a chance," said general manager Doug Melvin. "He's a good kid. He was kind of roadblocked with us. Our 40-man roster was full; you can't protect every player. Maybe he'll get a chance to play in the big leagues.

"His whole life is a fantasy camp. People should plunk down $2000 to live like him for a week. Sleep, do nothing, fall ass-backwards into money, mooch food off your neighbors and have sex without dating... THAT'S a fantasy camp."

If Hernan Iribarren is going to start at second base in Nashville this year, then there's little opportunity for Callix with the Sounds, other than some odd time in a corner outfield spot.

I find myself happier for Callix than I am disheartened at his loss. That's respectful of Crabbe in an odd way, I suppose.

Between Weeks (25), Irribarren (23), Bell (22), and Farris (21) they are pretty well stocked at 2B. Plus you can move just about anyone from the left side of the infield (SS/3B) to 2B (Gamel, Escobar, Brewer, Green, Heether could move there if necessary) but not vice versa, so I don't think Crabbe was a big loss.

If SD wanted Crabbe so much I wish they would have included him instead of Garrison in the trade...

From ESPN...

• The Padres plan to throw Callix Crabbe, a Rule 5 draft pick from Milwaukee, into their second-base competition in spring training. The Padres are looking for a one-year stopgap at the position until prospect Matt Antonelli is ready in 2009.

There was a third RHP taken by the Brewers in the Minor League phas as well, soon-to-be 27-year-old Juan Sandoval, who pitched at AA and AAA in the Mariners' organization last year with some ugly numbers, both raw and peripheral:

We'll post additional tidbits on the three new minor league RHP's during the overnight tonight in the Minor League Forum.

Good for Crabbe. He is one of the last players I remember watching at Beloit (as a Brewers franchise at least). I kind of thought he'd contend for a bench role for the Brewers this season, as the right handed complement to Counsell. I guess that'll be filled by Rottino or an offseason pick up.

I wish him the best, but he's 5-7 and limited to 2B/CF. He'd be a nice cheap utility IF if he had the tools to play SS and 3B, but if he did, he would not have played 2B all the way up the system. I would bet he'd be fun to watch play, but you can pretty much name the guys that size that have had success on one hand.

I like 2 of the 3 picks in the AAA Rule 5. They could be Bray-like, nice K numbers. Sandoval must throw hard or have a trick pitch, because he was simply awful in AA/AAA last year, 5 K's per 9.

I think it's clear that the Brewers are trying to grab a bunch of relievers hoping that one of them will stick. I also think it's clear that the organization does not feel comfortable with what they currently have.

I'm going to try and dig up some past scouting reports on the pitchers picked up this evening.

Good to hear that Callix will get a shot in San Diego, though it is tough to see him leave the organization. Like monty, he was a guy I watched play in Beloit on some really good teams. He's a guy I want to see make it no matter the club. Best of luck to him.
