Padres nab Callix Crabbe from us in Round 2 according to BA. The blogger hasn't mentioned whether we picked anyone or passed, but I'm guessing we passed. Too bad - there had to be somebody that could've outpitched Seth McClung and held down a bullpen spot all year.

Edit: for some reason, the previous 10 or so posts didn't show up until I wrote this one, which was completely unnecessary given that it contained no new info. Sorry.

Dunno, the success rate of these panning out is probably down around 10%...

My thoughts on why this is the case:

Rule 5 picks tend to be guys who are still pretty young, who the scouts like, but who've had little or no success performance-wise in the minors, so have been unable to advance through the system. If they had the minor league numbers to go along with their scouting reports, their club would have them protected safely on the 40 man. If teams were more willing to use Rule 5 picks on the other sort of unprotected player - the older one with the numbers but without the love from the scouts, the success rate would be higher. But since there is another avenue to get this kind of player (a large pool of freely available minor league FAs), teams tend to not look at them here. I think this is a mistake - the rule that you have to keep the player on the major league roster all season means that you really should be looking at someone who can contribute right now, so as not to waste a roster spot a la Enrique Cruz.

I'm sorry to be losing Crabbe - If we do end up signing Iguchi for a part-time role (for too much money for that kind of thing), it'll be interesting to see whether he outperforms Crabbe by enough of a margin to justify the extra expenditure.

I knew they'd lose Crabbe. He's been undervalued in the system (and on here) for a long time. That they protected Brad Nelson instead boggles my mind. The knock on him is he "can't play SS" whatever that means. He's very solid at 2nd and I have to believe in a pinch a guy that solid could also be respectable at SS. I won't be shocked if he goes on to have nice major league career.

He certainly is not going to be "overwhelmed" to be on a major league club like Enrique Cruz was several years ago with the Brewers.
