MIL signs David Riske (3yr/13M, plus incentives and team option for year 4), Laynce Nix'd

Why oh why must Greg Aquino still taunt me?

Obviously you undervalue fielding at the position of P, end. Duuuuuuh!

Great signing. I don't know where to start... the money, the years (that club option on the 4th year is nice), the incentives. All so good. Just don't expect a 90% strand rate again out of Dave, and we're all going to be pretty happy. Now it's time to go get another solid back of the 'pen arm!

Anderson has options left. I'd guess it's as simple as that. Anderson is a guy who would have some use as the 25th man in an injury situation without having to manuever the roster to bring him up or send him back down.

Actually I don't see much need for Brad Nelson on the 40 man either.

The fact that Nix was DFA and not Anderson is surprising.

Nix is a CF. I would have thought that with Gwynn as a little trade bait - we would keep Nix around as a back-up CF. I think this decreases that chances of Gwynn going anywhere this offseason.

Best of luck to Laynce, he still might have a few year run in the bigs. If I were rebuilding, I might give him and Brad Eldred (DFA'd by PIT) 500 AB's and just see what they could do. Nix might only have a .300 OBP, but he also might hit 30 HR's, and play a very good CF.

If that happens, it means we got a closer in the free agent market for 7 million per year, which is still a great number for the situation.

Well -- maybe -- My guess is that Riske will get some sort of clause that pays him to finish games. If Turnbow/Wise prove to suck/get hurt, then Riske would be finishing games by default -- I'd rather have CoCo at 10.5 in that case than Riske at 7.

Great signing.

David's now easily our best reliever. If only Ned would use him in high-leverage situations, instead of playing it by the book, we'd have something here. I fear there will be times when Riske will be rested and available, in the 9th inning, but "because Riske doesn't have an overpowering fastball and closer's stuff", Turnbow will be summoned for a save opportunity...which he'll blow, and we'll lose.

Over/under on how many times this will happen next year? 4 or 5 at least.

Please, Mark, Doug, Jeebus.... Deliver us from Ned!

I have worries, too, but will be content for now to just enjoy the addition of a quality arm.

I'm pretty happy with that signing, now I just hope we go out and get another arm. I didn't want Cordero because I think it is too much money for a closer but I do think the bullpen needs to be revamped and just adding Riske won't be enough.

I'm actually rather happy with the move. I think he'll be a better investment than say Linebrink but I desperately hope we can add another solid arm to the bullpen (without blowing a hole somewhere else). It doesn't even have to be a closer, just someone solid. I think if we bring in enough good arms the closer situation will sort it self out.

As for Nix, well - I was surprised a little bit, but I'm guessing DM and Co. are smarter than I in these matters.

With Hall still penciled in to be the starting CF we have Hart as the possible back up CF. Then a better bat than Nix (Gross et al) can play RF. I can't be too upset about DFA'ing a 27yo that has yet to crack even a steady bench job in the majors.

Sounds like a reasonable deal for a free agent RP with some upside. But I still can't get too excited, this isn't the move that puts us over the top. I'd like another 2 RP in Riske's caliber or 1 that's on CoCo's plus another big bat (LF or 3B). I'm getting anxious here.

I'm still impresses with what you can do with images on computers now. I remember collecting baseball cards as a kid back in the late 70's, early 80's. If a guy changed teams before they put out the cards for the new season, they would do this horrible "paint job" of trying to put the new teams hat or helmet on the player.

Semi-useless info: David Riske's wife name is Missy (Missy Riske, classic) and sings a wonderful national anthem.

So who's expecting a duet between Joe Attanasio and Missy Riske for the national anthem next year on opening day?

Hey, 20fry, if you still have all this time on your hands, and that nifty computer thingy, how about morphing Katie Holmes' ballcap she wore from the NY Marathon into one of ours? Pick your era. Golden Michigan Wolverine M, the MB ballglove, current boring barley logo, or even the Notre Dame green, gold and blue interlocking MB!

If that's not possible, how about Vanessa Hudgens's now-famous picture, only now she's wearing a 1982 Brewer batting helmet?

Ahh...for fun...
