What about Hall for Ethier straight up? I'd like Hall for Kemp better, but I'd be shocked if the Dodgers don't ask for more.

Ethier hits left-handed, has some pop, has a pretty good walk rate/OBP, and has played center field (or you could put Hart in center and Ethier to right)

That would still leave the door open to trade for a 3B and move Braun to left.

I know this isnt a Matt Kemp thread here, but who would you guys rather have included Ethier or Kemp? It looks like with Kones going to LA that would make one but not both available. Personally I like Ethier but I also tend to value OBP a little higher than some. Kemp really doesnt seem to walk all that much and his OBP seems to be tied into his BA rarely are they ever more than 50 points apart. Kemp does seem to be a little quicker, both are average fielders. If we are trading for guys to put into our starting lineup I just think this team needs more guys who can work the count and get on base. I am not hugely farmiliarwith Kemp, but I would say we should be targeting Ethier if we are going after either one of them.

Everyone keeps focusing on Sheets and Hall. What if it's something completely different? Like Hardy for Hu and Eithier. Not that I would be for a trade like that, but I believe I heard comments on XM last night that the Dodgers may be interested in moving a middle infielder that they called up later in the year. I believe that's Chin-lung Hu.

Ethier started 91 games in rightfield last year and had 8 assists from there, so I don't think he's locked in as a leftfielder (unless you meant as opposed to a centerfielder). I also think his lefthanded bat, his more consistent OBP splits versus lefties and righties and his probable lesser cost to acquire make him a more attractive/likely option for the Brewers than Kemp. A Braun, Hart, Ethier outfield would be exceptional. That said, I'd love Kemp as well.

If we can get Rolen for Capuano+ and Ethier for Hall, I'll be giddy about next year's lineup: Weeks, Ethier, Braun, Fielder, Rolen, Hart, Hardy, Kendall

I would say we should be targeting Either if we are going after either one of them.

I don't mean to pick on you, but this struck me as funny. (The name, not the idea...it's Ethier, not Either, but muscle memory always betrays me when I try to type 'Ethier.') http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif

Kemp is younger and has the better future by a long shot...he bats RH though and will cost us dearly, so there's some chance the Brewers would like Ethier who bats LH and will be cheaper in terms of talent in a trade. There were some rumblings about the Dodgers not liking Kemp's attitude, which has led to a lot of trade speculation. Kemp has hit for a high average throughout the minors, but strikes out a bit and doesn't walk a lot. He's always had good power, once hitting almost 30 HR in a minor league known as a pitchers' paradise, at age 20 (high-A FSL).

Be careful about Ethier's stats this year because his OBP is inflated a bit by 12 intentional walks. Personally I think Ethier is a bit overrated based on his first-year batting average. Last year he was ok but not special...he's 25 so has a little room to grow yet but seems unlikely to be a star. I see him as similar to Teahen or Murton, or our own minor leaguer Cole Gillespie: decent batting average and OBP, mid-range pop with good number of doubles but only 10-20 HR.

I think the Dodgers would be more than willing to part with Ethier and LaRoche right now. Matching up with them is going to be tough, I could see the two teams dancing around until they arrived at Ethier, LaRoche and Billingsley for Sheets and Hall, but then I'd bet LA would back off, because of Billingsley.

I don't think the Brewers can get a deal with LA until they've made their run at Erik Bedard.

Long time fan of this site finally making my first post. All this talk of Sheets being involved in a trade makes me wonder if we are trading the chance to make it to the wolrd series for a chance to win the world series. If Sheets stays, and remains healthy, and we make it to the playoffs we will have one of the best pitchers in the game starting every third game for us. If Sheets is traded and it increasses our chances of getting into the playoffs, but he isn't there to pitch in the playoffs can we rely on what we have enough pitching to go anywhere in the playoffs?

I guess right now I would rather keep him and have him available to pitch in the playoffs, than to trade him and have a better shot at the playoffs, but not have his arm when we get there.

Steve Stone just reported on 670 the Score that the Dodgers and Melvin are talking about Ethier and Kemp to the Brewers for Sheets. Stone feels said that package of players probably would not be enough to get Sheets to LA. He felt that the Dodgers will have to add another prospect or player to make a competitive offer.

They may have to add Laroche or Broxton to get Doug's ears to perk up. Juan Piere could also be in play perhaps if Hall is added in the deal. You could perhaps see a two for four deal done. for example:

Brewers get, Kemp, Ethier, Piere and Broxton.

Dodgers get, Sheets and Hall.

I would have to assume that Kemp/Ethier and Sheets would be part of a larger package, I hope Melvin would get at least one arm back for Sheets. Although, I believe Sheets' value to be lower than I am hoping for which is a good reason not to trade him.

I dont understand, why would they trade Sheets and Hall for two outfielders? Essentially it would be Sheets for Kemp and another player. Why even bother adding Hall, it just seems like you are trading the same player(Hall for Ethier)

I have to think that Bill Hall has far more value in trade than Ethier right now as he can play multiple positions on the infield too.

Hey - that's the century up for me. Took me long enough... http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif

I want no part of Pierre, even if the Dodgers pay like 90% of his salary. He'd be worse than Bill Hall in CF with his noodle arm, be a skinnier Johnny Estrada at the plate, and would just generally irritate me by wearing his cap under his helmet just to get it to fit his skinny little head. I think I just threw up a little in my mouth thinking of Juan Pierre in a Brewers uniform. I guess it wouldn't be that bad if the Brewers got Ethier/Kemp and Broxton, but I'd still hate to hear the taunts of Cubs fans about having Pierre on the roster.

I don't understand trading Ethier and Kemp from the Dodger's perspective. I thought they'd want at least one of them to play right. I can see Kemp / Ethier / LaRoche and Saito for Sheets. No way they'll cough up Broxton (as much as we all drool over him, you know they'll want to hang on to him

I personally want to resign Sheets but if we are going to trade him we must get back a young starter with upside. How about Kemp,Billingsley for Sheets and Gwynn. This way we get a great young outfielder as well as a young starter to replace Sheets. I definitely wouldnt trade Sheets without getting a young starter back in return.

I would say, let's throw in a prospect in that deal, and get LaRoche instead of Ethier. The dodgers can keep Pierre.

Something like:

Sheets, Hall, and Escobar

For:

Broxton, LaRoche, and Kemp.

We would then have a lineup of: (what an incredible collection of young talent! this would also make LaPorta available for trade, possibly for starting pitching sometime in the next year or two, since we would have young players at every position, and no real openings)

1. Weeks -2B

2. Kemp - CF

3. Braun - LF

4. Fielder - 1B

5. Hart - RF

6. LaRoche - 3B

7. Hardy -SS

8. Kendell - C

Bench:

OF-Gross

OF-Gwynn

IF/OF-Dillon

IF-Counsel

C- Rivera?

Rotation:

1. Gallardo

2. Villenueva

3. Suppan

4. Capuano

5. Bush

Bullpen:

CL: Broxton

SU: Riske

SU: Turnbow

MR: Wise

MR: Mota

LR: Parra

Loogy: Shouse

Also, adding those players over Hall and Sheets, would mean the Brewers would be in a great place to add a significant amount of payroll, quite possibly in the starting rotation.
