Tigers, Marlins talk Mega-Deal (Cabrera/Willis for Maybin/Miller/Others)

I guess I see your point, but from all/most signs, Maybin is going to be a star. I think very highly of Felix Pie, and think Maybin clearly has the chance to be better. The price tag on Cabrera (both through trade and then retaining him contractually) is so high, and his conditioning isn't the best.

Reports are that Cabrera has already lost 15 pounds this offseason and is taking his conditioning very seriously.

Dunno, two years of the best third baseman in the game in his prime is pretty hard to pass up, even if you're giving up a talent like Maybin.

as for detroit, they won't have pudge or Sheffield and their salaries around much longer. So when Cabrera or Willis want their big pay checks, Detroit should have some available for them. cabrera is already a n all star and he's as young as many rookies.

I would make this deal if I' m Detroit. I don't like prospects that much. Detroit can always draft some more prospects to be ready in 2-3 years down the road. there's a maybin and miller or better prospect in every draft. Guys like Willis and Cabrera don't come around very often.

Good to hear about Miguel, Automator, thanks. I guess one angle I'd forgotten is that he can DH there. Maybe this does make sense, but I still'd be wary to give up such good young talent. There I go again, being a fan of a small-market team. Will someone put a parking lot over me already?

15 is easy to do in a month for a million bucks. I'll really listen when they say Cabrera has lost 30-40 and kept it off.

This should be in blue right? 40 lbs? He is not 300 lbs or anything, 15 lbs is a good amount for him.

Considering the Tigers have never had a problem with paying their top prospects over slot money, I don't think replenishing the farm system with top prospects will be very hard to do for them. I'd be interested to see just how much the Tigers would give up in return, though -- it's pretty much a lock that Maybin, Miller, and Dallas Trahern would be involved, but who else do they include? They already gave away two of their better trading chips when they dealt Jair Jurjjens and Gorkys Hernandez for Edgar Renteria. Do they throw in Brent Clevlen and Jeff Larish? Eulogio de la Cruz?

He could EASILY lose 40 lbs in my opinion. He was on a slippery slope of lost potential if he let it continue.

This is from a newspaper report:

The 6-foot-4 Cabrera, listed at 185 pounds when he was called up in 2003, played 2007 at about 255 and made a league-high 23 errors, prompting some to suggest he be moved to first base.
That's being generous. Let's say Cabrera was 260 last year, at 220 he would be a monster.

so, how many pounds has Prince lost lately? at least cabrera is doing something.

Prince has lost 30 or 40 pounds since High School and works very hard to keep it off. They are different athletes.

Cabrera was a skinny kid that ballooned several years into the majors and his play declined; Prince was a huge kid that got into shape and was a near-MVP.

I don't really agree with the 'his play declined' notion on Cabrera, but the pics tell a story about conditioning, that's for sure.

Cabrera's play declined? What aspect of Cabrera's play has declined? his defense? His defense was never that spectacular to begin with. Cabrera started out as a shortstop in the minors. He then played CF his first few years for the marlins, and then switched to playing third last year. he's kind of learning on the job. As for his hitting, the marlins are constantly giving away his protection in the batting line-up, and he continues to hit for average and power.

I will agree Prince lost 30-40 pounds after leaving high school. That was well documented several years ago when he was first drafted. the picture of Prince on the cover of the USA Today Baseball Insider November 2007 Special Edition looks a tad heavier than the one who signed a baseball for me when he was playing A ball for Beloit.

As for Cabrera's weight, he was only 19 when he was first called up to start for the Marlins. I would think he would want to add a few pounds to his bones. Sporting News lists his height at 6'2 rather than 6'4. So he has obviously also shrunk .

I would hope all professional athletes work out on a daily basis.
